Have you tried keeping your ropes nice and short?

Shorter Ropes
Not saying its your pots , but i'm getting annoyed at those who have miles of rope left floating . I know the pots have come in closer and it seems a lot of them still have too much rope out .
Last time out I nearly came a cropper on a pot rope that would have had at least 50mtrs floating on the surface . This was in 37mtrs of water with the sea breeze in , so god only knows how much rope was actually on the pot .
Another annoying thing is pots on leed lines ( spelling ) . Both of these things are dangerous .
Don't want to get there fast - just want to get there and back safely .

i would also like to see the floats kept in a visable condition esp at night browm floats are hard to see
getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

Those brown/green floats
Those brown/green floats about 4-9mile out are occky pots that have been there for a long time, don't know what's going on with them but they are a pain and defiantly don't get the regular checking the cray pots do.
always looking for a new challenge!!

With the longer ropes I know
With the longer ropes I know it's annoying to find 50m of rope floating but just pay attention to the wind direction and stick to the side behind the floats and the longer ropes become a lot less of a problem.
always looking for a new challenge!!

Very true Chris, thats good seamanship but
having fished myself for quite a few years, Ive got to say it is just plain lazy and sloppy for anyone commercial or rec to set pots with heaps of rope floating.
Fully aware that sometimes ya come in from deep and are late/rough/tired etc and chuck the pots over without changing ropes, but any decky worth having can tie half a coil off in a few seconds to avoid it.
If its not done then you need to expect some attrition, unfortunately in a battle between an 11mm cray rope and a smaller outboard motor, its more likely the outboard to come off second best.
Rope on the surface cant be seen in many circumstances especially sun on a glassy surface etc. Some would say that you should be travelling slower then but that is the same argument as saying that crayboats should winch slower in case of a sinker/hook in the rope.
Being a windsurfer we used to have a crayfisherman who'd regularly set 10+ pots across the break at Coronation beach with 10 fathom ropes in 2 meters of water, and windsurfers/kiters heading out into the arvo sun cant see them and get catapulted. Maybe worse the gray army heading out in a tinny through the surf break could get tangled and a serious incident occurs.
MEZYO-just to add, not saying thats what you've done at all, I know it can be tough fishing in the urban environment for many reasons.
Good onya for bringing it up here.
Commercial and Rec need to put some of the shit that gets shovelled around into the background because we all want the same thing.

to people who tie up the rope
to people who tie up the rope to shortens, i really hate those people who do that... how ever we have atleast 3metres extra rope floating but shouldn be a problemm in close, out deep sea in the 80-130 fanthoms with the high and low tides.. nothing cannot be done really cause if we tie them up and get the high tide the next day... we waste a whole day of fishing and petrol... even tho we had tides go higher and couldnt reach to pots for days.
just basically in close ( entrance of the marina ) most of our pots are all around there like today we lost 3 pots -.- joyyyyys !

why do you "really hate
why do you "really hate people" who do that? I agree its sloppy, but much better than nothing.
The problem is not a few extra fathoms out in the 100's, its the 40 fathom ropes in 5-10 fathoms outside marinas or in metro areas.
Also though I must add that I find it hard to believe that any but maybe the largest outboards would cut a crayrope. With no ropecutters? Ive dived on plenty of crayboat props to cut rope off thats stalled it WITH ropecutters let alone an outboard.
I think you may be looking in the wrong direction for the culprits?
Best of luck with the season though, theres a few challenges ahead for the industry and I have quite a few friends still in there.

Fair call Meyzo, 2 sided
Fair call Meyzo,
2 sided coin, boat skippers should be watching out for the professional float, and pro's need to be mindful of leaving too mcuh rope out in the shallower depths!

Mate you need to look at you
Mate you need to look at you fellow pros there the ones cutting your pots .I fished 30years out of two rocks and in the dark we cut of pots on a regular basis.I have had a small boat for the last 20 year and to date have only ever cut one pot with the prop.the rope slips up between the boat and motor dosnt go around the prop .I would say move your pots or I'm sure you will lose many more.

yahhh we have seen other pros cut our pots, even us....
but just sending the message out.... we have people who cut out pots, tie a single float on it or pull it in and take it to the marina!
