 Pretty rare if ever happens.

Pretty rare if ever happens. We spend hours in the water with all sorts of whalers in Exmouth. Dont worry unless there are lots and they getting agro.

I am shit scared of GW's

Wed, 2013-03-13 09:01

Chased on a windsurfer once and once only.

As for the others dont bother, even though nowadays dont venture OB very often. To old and fat so cant sink!!!!

However I think a pectoral fin slanted down and arching back from a bronzie means beware, but it is still very rare that the aggresion is aimed at the divers. I have no fear of a Tiger even in display. Their natural food is dead things and turtles/rays etc, and we dont realy look dead or like a turtle. Not faced a Mako, but belong in the same family as GW Carcaradon so I think the same fear with them.

I think with the agro display best thing is not to test theories but get out. If some drunk idiot in a Club etc starts arching up, move away or get out. One punch or a bottle is not going to feel good, not is one bite from a Noah.

PS Doc for 25yrs and Never treated a shark bite, not even from a wobby, which surprisingly bites more humans than any other shark in WA.

Missed it on tv

Is there anything online? Google is coming up blank for me.

Have seen a lot more whalers in Perth in the last two years than in the 5 years before that. Quite often without burleying or even shooting fish. The further south I dive, the more nervous bronzies make me. I'm not sure why, maybe just because I don't expect them as much.

shark attack

Wed, 2013-03-13 10:08

Adam was pretty lucky... I spoke with him the other day and he understands how lucky he was but it hasnt changed his thoughts/opinions on diving. Most if not all sharks like has been mentioned above can be watched and read to see/understand what mood there in. Bronzies generally arnt to bad , a few fake rushes and the odd stolen fish. He didnt have time to understand or see what mood the shark was in. He shot a shark mack and as he said was commencing to burly. Obviously he has the mack clipped the handle of his gun. Firstly he felt a displacement behind him and turned to see nothing but bubbles. The shark had raced in and shyed away. He turned around and thought about getting rid of the burly just in case. As he reached for the handle of his gun thats when the shark hit him from behind and below. The only thing i think that saved him having more damage and the shark grabbing more of his arm wsa the fact the thing came straight between his legs and the dorsal hit him fair in the crack! Lifted him out of the water etc etc. The other scary tihing was when he had hold of the spear tip while the shark thrashed with the mack in its gob. Not that he wanted to let go of his big aimrite!

Can't find anything on google either. Is the bloke okay?

As all spearos know thats the nature of the beast when it comes to spearfishing - theres always that risk but as anyone whos spent a lot of time freediving will tell you the reward and amazing experience generally far outweighs the risk! As said above with the exception of GW attacks its usually the shark after the fish not the diver in most cases.

Might not seem like a freak accident to people who dont spear often but when you consider how many spearos are in the water surrounded by sharks year round for so few attacks most of which are accidentally getting caught up in between a shark and the fish its after it really is a bit of a freakish accident.

Hope he makes a quick recovery!

 Swim with bronzies almost

Wed, 2013-03-13 14:50

Swim with bronzies almost every second dive and they aren't scary or intimidating at all. They usually just cruise in for a look then shoot off or if they get really excited a few pokes and they go away. Stolen fish and an adrenalin rush is all they do now. Shot a sambo infront of a fired up bronzie on the weekend and he just cruised around looking at what was going on and bumped me a few times when I had the fish but wasn't trying to attack me.

Mako sharks I think would be my number one fear when jumpin in, they just look agro and way to active and almost hyperactive, whites if they let you see them then they aren't interested in attacking you so if I see one  I would be keen to swim around with it. I've always been told its the one you don't see that's the one to fear.

A general rule is where there

Wed, 2013-03-20 10:32

A general rule is where there are good fish, there are sharks and they are an inherant danger. However they only want your fish, not the diver.

Couple dives back I shot a little bonzey, great chew!
