No fish at Denham!!

 Hi fishos,

Just got back from a 3 day trip across to DHI from Denham in the boat and didn't bring back any fish! Everything we caught was either oversized, undersized or illegal to keep (potato cod) every pink snapper we caught was 750mm and bigger so couldn't bring them back.. Managed a good sized rankin cod a Spanish mack and a few crabs. Will post pics up of the trip soon.

Wind was terrible and made us drift at about 1.2 - 1.5 knots so holding ground was hard work... The trip back last night was pretty hairy with 30 knot winds.... Boat handled it well.

We are heading to monkey Mia today to go for a fish out of there.... If there are any locals or fishos that have fished there can anyone give us some pointers on where to go so at least we can bring some fish home?

cheers

thats a bummer, but for me at least its not all about the fish.

We have done a couple of Abrolhos trips where we brought back little or no fish due to either weather or my incompetence.

I really enjoy exploring into the little nooks and crannies, small bays etc

Personally I probably would have headed down into the lower regions where there is lots of bays and peninsulas for shelter from wind.

I think Randell has done a few Monkey Mia trips and may be able to help you?

Mate I have fished shark bay

Mate I have fished shark bay extensively, everyone tells you to fish bent pin, forget it its full of undersized fish during the day. If you are fishing on Denham side as Rob has said explore around a it, fish are not necessarily out deep, I have caught most of my better fish in shallow water.  South passage has plenty of potential. I Have also fished Monkia mia and agiain had good results within 5 km from the ramp, if you want to venture further out Faure island has good fishing again in shallower water. Fished there in February a few years ago and got a couple of mackies in less then 2 metres of water. Sorry not going to give exact spots but hopefully the info I have given will help.

Clog wog has given you the key to unlock that areas secrets. The shallow water is the go. We caught mackeral and big taylor on the trawl and balck snapper and blue bone in water 1 metre deep. Grab some crab legs and wack them on a hook and see what you get around the rocks. You will be surprised.

Another spot on the Monkey Mia side is the Snapper patch. approx 7km east of the ramp. You will see boats out there all the time you can drift around a huge area and pull up small snapper all day. But if you fish a couple of hours before the turn of the tide especially at night you will get the big ones.
