Newby to Jigging
Hi guys and gals. I'm heading off in two weeks to enjoy a charter with Whitey out of Jurien. I have always used bait and Whitey generally catches live bait on the way out and I intend taking some Californian squid as well. I have never, ever used any sort of non-bait lure and will for the first time try out one or both of a pink Octo jig and a 150 gram metal. Are there any tricks to using them? I've watched a few vids and have a reasonable idea about the action required, but I'm a bit unsure of depths suitable for the two types. I guess the metal would be OK in deeper water, but what about the Octo? I feel a bit of concern about whether I should start out with bait and then change to jigs, or whether I should just plough into the jigs to start with. Are there any "Jurien Junkies" who can give me the benefit of experience? Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.
Cheers
Baz

...Whitey's advice on jigging would be as good as anyone's and the crew in his shop would be cluey as well.

Hahaha if your gonna ask
Hahaha if your gonna ask anyone its whitey himself. He is the master and its easier learning if your watching. He will be more than happy to show and teach you as well. By the way, getting hooked on jigs is an expensive exercise.

Belt and braces man.
Thanks guys. I guess it sounded like a silly question, but my only demersal fishing until very recently, was using a 100lb mono hand line out from Canal Rocks from a 12 foot tinny. The sinker was a used dozer track roller bearing which my step father used to get from work. Didn't own a hand caster. Just a piece of jarrah plank with a Vee cut out of each end. It gave your knuckles a good workout if a decent fish took off on a run. No thought at all was given to bait presentation and you used bloody great big hooks on the bottom and a slightly smaller one on the top with a couple of bits of fairly old occy or sqid which was left over from previous fishing trips. Now at least I've graduated to a reasonable rod and reel and fish with braid with the terminal tackle which would have been used for whiting in the "old" days.
I'll still take some squid and I will get some advice from Whitey and if I get lucky, I'll post some picks on the brag board.
Cheers
