Yeah might be a bit blowy on the coast so id give the river a shot too except id avoid areas from the city up to freo due to blowies, although he will still have fun. Depends on where you are located and how far you wana go, id head to somewhere like garvey park (ascot kyak club) or the park across the river from ascot race course, there is a killer kids playground, toilets, you can take dogs there and theres always bream under the jetty hut thats there. You could go futher up to fish market reserve too. Theres a good chance of bream before we get any decent rain and no blowies in these areas and always a chance of mulloway if you soak a big bait in the deeper water. As for rig, just tread a small ball sinker on your mainline and tie on a 1/0 circle hook, stick on a piece of shelled prawn, or even mulie.or squid, cast or drop down (if on jetty) and put rod down and wait. All you need to do is gently lift the rod when a fish takes it usually after a few nibbles. Good luck, bloody good pastime to get you and the boy into

Tim-o is onto it. I take my young bloke to the park with the killer playground (Bayswater Riverside Gardens?) from time to time & he thinks it's great. There's a fallen tree just to the left of the hut that Tim-o mentioned that is within easy casting distance & also has a few decent bream on it from time to time. Walk a few hundred meters upstream just past the boat ramp & you will find another couple of fallen trees that usually have a few bream sitting on them. The tackle & technique mentioned will serve you well.

Don't know where you're living.

But the jetty at Coo Gee could be the way to go. Jetty, beach (& life savers) toilets, playground, eating shelters and barbecues, and a quick food shop.
