Yep scary little buggers - had one in a pot the other day but alot bigger. Lucky it fell out as the pot went over the side but could see the rings. It was posts like this that actually made me look for them in the first place. :)
You have to be bitten to get ill from them. Will likely stop you from breathing. If mouth to mouth is performed, without stopping, and you go to hospital you will survive
However the ones I saw on the back reefs of GI West Aust were just as the name says, they had bright iridescent blue rings on them when they arc up on a brownish body.
Has anyone seen any like that.
Just curious is there a number of species of these things
I'll try and find a photo on here as I'm pretty sure there is a photo taken of one by a member at Rotto a year or so back.
I took a few closer shots of this guy but with me having just pulled a pot from 22m (breathing like a bellows) and the rock of the boat they were all out of focus.
If you zoom in to this guy you will see the bright blue of the rings.
Yep heaps, got them in stubbies, tin cans, cray pots and last one was in a nice shell i picked up in my non gloved hand diving, didnt know till got home and cleaned out catch bag, got footage of me picking it up on gopro. Ones in pots at point peron are usally found in shell gritty bottom ive found, we didnt know until they were spotted crawling up the side of boat. All the rest where in safety bay 2-10ft of water.
I hope this link works, if not the article don't try this at home shows a bloody nut case holding one in his hand. The article is on the second page of the search looking for blue ring octopus.
Interesting, this season is the first that I can recall where there have been so many reports about these little critters. Have they always been here and people just haven't noticed or commented or has a swarm of the buggers just infested Perth waters ?

Via a bite - Maggot
And part of the problem apparently is that - there not necessarily painful bites...when you realise you've been bitten - you'd be lucky to survive.

We found one on the deck this morning on the way out. Funny thing was the boat hadn't been out for three days and this occy was still nice and fresh.

This time of year
Very bad. I always look for them . Missed this one. When emptying bait baskets always use gloves . That's where they are.

I'm not questioning that they are blue ring occys
