lures for big queenies in shallow water

Was wondering what you guys have had most success with on the big queenies in shallow water. Been chasing them land based and have seen them so I know there there but so far no success. Been using whiptail jigs with the second feather removed and tango dancer surface lure so far but only school mackeral on the board. What else should I try excluding live baits because we are fishing along way offshore and carrying them out there with us is not an option.

Thanks for your input guys. The tango dancer I was using is about 100mm long and is a surface lure. Do you think that is too small or just not the right type. It looked to have a good action as I worked it and found a faster retrieve was producing on the macks. What kind of retrieve do you use ie bloop or wind and twitch or flat out?

 A quickly retrieved popper

A quickly retrieved popper works and does not need to be big.  It as much need to bloop it as they like to chase a fast surface lure. I also like the old faithful Halco spoon. Queenies love them.

Saw micha adams filming from a local guides boat and he was fishing fly near where we were. Didn't see much action from his end either but got to give it to him , he kept casting that fly rod for hours. We were fishing spin and were knackered but he must of been stuffed.

humble Lead head feather jig, or even a twisty. It is not the lure IMO but the absolute flat out retrieve that fires them up. Go as fast as you can.

I used a heap off different lures in Dampier for them, but found out with the Jig or slice I could get more distance, and hence time in the zone.

If a fast retrieved pencil

Fri, 2013-10-18 10:11

If a fast retrieved pencil popper doesn't get them going (don't bloop your popper, they may swipe but give it a constant retrieve and watch them go nuts) i'd be looking at the humble 40g twisty, you can chuck it a mile and like the popper retrieve it fast, otherwise stickbaits work well.
