Land-based Fishing - Broome WA
Hi All,
Up in Broome until Friday 6th September so hoping for some land-based fishing tips. Disappointing to hear only 180m of the 640m of the jetty boardwalk is accessible now as I do not have access to a 4WD. Not targeting anything specific just keen to get out for a fish.
Good fishing spots (?):
The Jetty
Entrance Point Rocks near the Fishing Club
Town Beach Boat Ramp Rock Groyne
Gantheaum Point Rocks
Cable Beach North of the Rocks
Gear I’m taking:
15kg travel rod
5kg travel rod
40-pound hand reel
200-pound hand reel
Hoping for any tips or pointers for any of the fishing locations such as suggested bait, recommended lures, best tides (slack water top of the tide?) etc.
If any locals are going for a fish and want some company / someone to assist with costs let me know.
Thanks in advance.
cheers

Update
Fished of the Broome jetty today from 10:20 to 13:15 with lures and bait. Zero bites. Saw one 50cm long Tom in the water and saw two small queen fish landed. Fished the end and 2/3rds of the open boardwalk (approx 160m).
Hand reels needed 12-16oz sinkers to hold bottom with the tide. Used squid and mulies. Tide seemed too strong and shallow waters were too packed early on to even bother trying to catch livies.
Poppers and lures with a large enough bib to dive fared best. Anything else just skimmed across the surface with the strong tide.
will try beach fishing tomorriw on cable beach north of the rocks.

You haven’t mentioned Willie Creek
Looks real fishy on high tide and only need a 2wd to get there

Huge tides at the moment so
Huge tides at the moment so hard work. Fished both days for a total of 2 small threadies(released), 9 stingray, nearly spooled by a large shovelnose and a thousand catfish. Weather was awesome but.
Won't have 2wd access to willie creek as 10 metre tide will put the track under water and the high track is shit. Too much movement for Willie creek.

At 9 plus metres
That is a lot of water moving at high tide, have you tried fishing from the jetty right at the tide change, either at low to high or high to low.

Update 2
Tried Cable Beach yesterday and off the rocks at Gantheum Point today both during high tide change. Zero success. Low tide change is at 7:11AM tomorrow so will give that a go off the jetty. Just not sure how much water I’ll be fishing in considering so much of the jetty is closed. Can’t be any worse than past three attempts at high tide change.

Do you know why so much of the jetty is closed
For a town that bleats about how much there is for tourists to do there you have to ask why close of a large chunk of one of the major tourist attractions.

Used to be open before 9/11.
Used to be open before 9/11. Virtually every working wharf Australia side lost public access in the tightening of security that followed.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

The walkway is closed at the moment due to jetty maintenance that would make it unsafe to be on the walkway as this work is being carried out.
