Kalbarri

 Hi all,

I have a week booked in Kalbarri next week and was chasing some info on what species I should be targeting at this time of year? I have a 4x4 as well as possibly towing a 5.5m boat up from Perth. What should I expect to catch from the beach/boat and would it be worth towing the rig up?

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

gday, was up there a few weeks

gday,

was up there a few weeks ago, hired a boat from murchison boat hire (the bloke is very helpful and gives plenty of advice). landed one mackie on the troll and had quite a few hookups, also got a small snapper when we stopped for a quick bottom bounce in front of wagoe.

Apart from that we caught bugger all off the beach, there was a bit of swell and we had a difficult time of it. Tailor, mulloway and sharks (and snapper in certain spots) are the usual targets up there from what i can gather.

The mouth is tricky to navigate and potentially very dangerous in bad conditions, I'm not sure what swell height etc constitutes 'bad'. I'd try and look at a forecast for next week to help decide whether to bring the boat, you could always hire one if u only get a day or two good weather, depends on ur budget.

If you do a search on kalbarri you should see my own post (kalbarri charter or something) and some others with similar questions and responses. cheers

Some good advice there from versus, not sure how many mackies there will be around at this Time of year but the bottom bouncing is pretty good, if it's rough you can always stay in the river.  LB there is heaps from tailor on poppers to soaking baits for mulloway or rock fishing for snapper and chasing bream in the river

Seriously, if you have a tinnie and plenty of gear to suit differing species inside and out I can't see you going wrong. Local knowledge is however important. Make some friends up there on the rough days and listen to what they say. Most of all, the conditions up there change quickly and it is a very dangerous place if you don't know what you are doing.

Personally, I love the place and have done for lots of years. It's the same as everywhere else though, you get nothing and the bloke next to you in the pub has cashed in........... or at least he said he has.....
