It's farewell to boating

But not to fishing. I've turned 76 and I promised my wife that I'd sell my boat when I turned 80. However the best made plans etc. I have to have a full hip replacement in a couple of months and the specialist advised me not to try fishing in a small boat because, in his words, "throwing the leg might dislocate the hip". Anyway I've listed my beloved Pongrass in the "For Sale" section. I will still be going on the occasional charter and of course, will keep an eye on the happenings on Fishwrecked. I've picked up a lot from the writings in the Forum, So it' it's goodnight from Him.

Good on ya Poppy , I dont know you , but I respect any man that puts his health and family first.
Besides like you say , theres charter fishing and even easy beach or shore fishing to while away the hours buddy.
Some people have hardly fished a day in there life out of boats , and yet still get enormous satifaction and pleasure out of fishing,
indeed theres nothing quite like being on a beautiful quiet beach on a still autuum dawn , or the chattering buzz of friendship and a common loved shared on
a charter , reguardless of wheather you catch or not.
You have alot to look forward too mate , deep down I think a fisherman , is a fisherman for life, cheers.

Right decision
Hi Baz, sorry that time has come for you, I am 77 and still have a 5m Qiuntrex, my wife is 74, and we still use the boat, but we launch and retrieve VERY slowly...lol
My knees are starting to give me trouble, so maybe the decision to sell my boat is coming, kids are telling us to stop, but we like to venture out on the river and peel estuary, will have a think about it after this season.

Hip dislocation
Your surgeon is correct that you need to be careful not to dislocate the hip following hip replacement surgery. The possibility of dislocation generally extends for 3 months after surgery and then the risk diminishes. Well that's what my surgeon told me and I had the left hip done Jan 2017 and right revision hip surgery done May 2017 after the original lasted 20 years. For sure be careful however hip surgery shouldn't curtail your boating activities.

Good luck with the op poppy, maybe you'll get back in to it, you never know. I sold my boat not long after being diagnosed with an incurable cancer, bones falling apart, immune system stuffed and given 40% chance of lasting 5 more years an outlook of extreme chemo and radiotherapy. I've just past 5 years very hard years, but bought another 2 boats since selling the other one. Still getting in some good fishing. Making it to 76 is not going to happen though, I've been lucky to make it to 63. Hopefully got a few years left though. Anyway, there's a different perspective for you

Hope the op goes well for you poppy and you can eventually get back out there. Get the sand between your toes and hit the beach to get your fix.
Rod, you must be a tuff old bugger. If that can't keep you off the water I don't know what will. Hope you get another 10 years and you defy the odds!

Its been a blast to wander the ocean at will
But like a few on here I can feel it getting closer.much more comfortable going out as crew now.

Peoples' health will vary.
I've seen plenty that were stuffed at 65. Or didn't even make it. And I went to a funeral and wake yesterday for a bloke who died at 90, after a short illness. He was really powering and boating until the last couple of years. As for me, I'll be 65 in January. In good shape, can still fish all day. But I, too, have a decision to make. Do I stick with the old Dommie, good boat that she is, or lash out? Get " the last boat" while I can still enjoy it? Seriously considering a new Reef Runner, pulling out a chunk of super to do it. F**k it, I've worked hard to get here , I should enjoy it. Maybe call it Sci-Fi ( spending childrens inheritance , fishing intensively
