hi guys

hi guys, i'm a newbee here and just wanted to say hi, my name is marc, and unfortunately i dont reside in aussie, south african i am, but merely wanted to get in touch with people fishing all over on a similar equator line, hence similiar fish. I have a small boat, nothing of the size i have seen in your guys pics, but would like to hear from you, possibly share stories and learn a little, and share our techniques on catching similar fish. anyway all in all great to meet you. :-)

can't complain

Tue, 2008-12-09 15:57

have many good memories of S.Africans from my travels....many hangovers and other stuff i wont mention....ha ha

sounds like you have many common interests as us over here, most people split between north/south species but the way you fish is somewhat simliar overall.

but the northeners are spoit for choice..adam and Co. (you will get to know them over time) are your men as they live in the best fishing patch in Oz I reckon, around exmouth.

me personally i like lure and soft plastic fishing and will throw at any size fish.

aussie lingo

a sambo is a samson fish (related to kingfish and amberjack) check out the lastest image section under your personal content (top left).

big fish and WA is famous for them schooling on wrecks and a lot of the new jigging gear has been designed with them in mind.

SP = soft plastic. the scented refer to the new slam/atomic/gulp brand name biodegradable as opposed to standard PVC plastics. they are scented with various chemicals to attract fish.

he damo, one thing i wanted

Tue, 2008-12-09 16:52

he damo, one thing i wanted to ask, i saw a video on fishing in oz, but they did not use the conventional gaff(one with the hook on the end) more over they had some type of gaff you slid over the tail of the fish and lifted it up that way into the boat, do you know, what it is called, and any idea how i could find out more bout it???

yeh mate

Tue, 2008-12-09 16:55

remember aussie's tend to drop half the word and add an O (Damian to Damo) amoungst other examples....

I'v thrown SP at anything except billies......

mostly bream and pinkies (pink snapper) as I live south but caught sambo's as well plus plenty of other but these 2 are my main attack.

up north what ever my gear can handle before the taxman enters the scence.......

ahha i got it now LOL

wow now you making me keen to try it, i tend to think us here are slightly engrossed with using live bait, as for most i have ventured into jigging, slowly i'm coming right but the old members in my fishing club laugh at me, now after this weekend gone, they have realised maybe it is the way to go!!!!

LOL well gear is important, are you using braid at all damo?

braid

Tue, 2008-12-09 19:42

have plenty of braid on reels, about the only exception is braid on trolling gear....now before a war starts over that comment yes i do use braid to troll but some don't like it. i still have trolling reels full of mono and will just swap in time. if you use braid to troll then just have a long leader to absorb the speed of the hit......

anything from 4lb to 50lb myself.

jigging works real well, stuff the old drongo's and give it a go.....

something else taking off is using rubber squid jigs......

metal head shape of squid with rubber tail. has 2 assist hooks and you drop down then real gentle lift. plenty of brands on market at mo

you should talk to canadians A....they love pronounce the A on every sentance....but so do Territorians....made for good conversation when I left the territory and landed in canada.....
