Has WA gone crazy?
I don't know about the rest of you but I'm getting really really tired of the hysteria towards sharks in WA because of recent attacks.
As far as I'm concerned if you fish, swim, surf or dive then sharks are part of our sea life we have to learn to live with.
Some years the currents and temperatures along with other migrating sea species will see an increase in sharks or a decrease. The seasons are never the same.
I think some people here in WA have forgotten a few things, or have never been taught a few things, and these are what a lot of us have known from young or been told when we were younger. And that is;
You never swim in the water between seasons: Why? - Because the water is often murky, currents and rips are changing and it can be dangerous.
You never swim in the water at sunset or sunrise: Why? - Because these are the peak feeding times for sharks close to beaches.
I know a lot of surfers and they all tell me the same thing, "It's the risk we take at this time of year"
To me it's common sense that you don't go in the water when it is murky, when it is the change of seasons, when Whales are migrating and when there are a lot of Seals about.
This hunting a Killer Shark down just to save the WA tourist dollar is absolutely ridiculous.
I fish nearly every weekend out of Bunbury and when's the last time there was a Shark attack there? I can tell you though that I often have small Blue Sharks, and Hammerheads and whalers swim round my boat and often not more than a few 100 metres from shore and it's been this way for the last 5-6 years, but that wouldn't worry me going in the water in the middle of summer between daylight ours when no seals are around and the water is clear.
The media has a lot to answer for and this subject has been blown way out of proportion, Sharks have their place in the eco-system as Crocodiles do, as snakes do etc etc.
Over it!

Dumper, I'd like to see some positive reaction rather than negative to my way of thinking.
I know there are many members on this site that think the same ways as I do.

Mate theres a thread with over 150 posts exactly like yours on it. If you think your opinion is any different to the others on the previous thread and need to start a seperate thread expressing your feelings towards a fish then you either A) havent been paying attention or B) have your head up your ass

Don't quite understand
one of your theories.
'You never swim in the water between seasons: Why? - Because the water is often murky, currents and rips are changing and it can be dangerous.'
What exactly do you define as 'change of season'?
Also the dawn/dusk theory is irrelevent now with the last 3 fatalities being during the day.
Personally if your time is up it's up, your gonna go one way or another.

Heres a positive statement ,
Heres a positive statement , ever considered moving to another state. What about Tasmania. You could then join the rest of the greens as a minority party and force gay marriage, carbon tax, no more live cattle ect ect ect on the majority of australians that dont want it. I think they call it democracy.

Thanks Bluetonic for the common sense approach to this subject.I think he means winter as between seasons Matt. But dawn to dusk is good theory as we all know it's the best time to fish the beach.Totally agree with your logical comments.

A wise man said
It's all about how it's marketed.
I am now a firm believer that we no longer need to "cull" great whites.
I think they should now be "sustainably farmed".....
