Five fathom bank

Hi guys,

After multiple unsuccessful trips out in 30-40m past the five fathom with drifting paternoster, I have decided on change of tactics and will try fishing the back of the five fathom bank.

Would you recommend sounding around for fish at the back of the bank and then drift ( if drift would I use drifbait or paternoster ) or would anchoring and burley be the better option?

Cheers for any tips for fishing this area.

Joycey

I have never ever done well with paternoster out there. I only ever use fresh whole baits or fillets on a snelled rig! Theres is some good ground in 30-40 but its hard to find I normally go futher ! I always drift, never bother anchoring.

Cheers mate,
What direction and how much further beyond the 30-40m area do you need to go before you get good ground/fish?
Haven't been further than high 30's as I have a 5.3m boat.
Cheers.

Couple of years back we used

Couple of years back we used to anchor up and burley and then chuck unweighted mulies on gangs down the berley trail then i would use paternosters to catch skippy and dad would try his luck on the heaver paternoster gear while waiting for something to hit the mulies but always picked up a couple of decent snapper and sambos on the mulies

One time a massive school of salmon just suddenly appeared about 20 metres from the back of the boat we got like 30 salmon between the two of us in an hour
I was in the paper couple of years back for catching a 6kg pinkie on my 3kg bream gear on the five
Geez was that hard and that was on the floater

Just sit on a nice lump or

Just sit on a nice lump or patch of ground on the FFB that is safe from breakers (if there are any) and burley constantly. Don't get impatient and move around too often because fishing is a waiting game. If you burley for long enough fish will swim from China to come and have a look, even if there are none on the sounder when you initially rock up (slight exaggeration). Persistance pays off. There is a good spot listed here  http://fishwrecked.com/forum/heres-few-spots-you-guys thats on the FFB that i've tried and has got some good lumps. Its an old thread but theres multiple spots you can try.

Good luck
