Fishwrecked Jewfish Database?

If we feel we are being stiched up by dodgy research, then I suggest we start our own Jewfish Database.

A typical entry might be

SPECIES       M/F           LENGTH       WEIGHT      LOCATION      DEPTH      ANGLER          DATE

Jewfish          M              65cm           8.5kg        Hillarys Wide    62M        P.Thomas        9/11/08

This could be done with all of the V5 SPECIES.  I am sure a new section of this site could be developed to accomodate this idea.

After a period of time we will have concrete evidence and will be able to make our own submissions to the West Australian newspaper etc.

Cheers Peter

Good Idea PB! One suggestion maybe?

Would you want to record whether it was released or retained?

Just a thought.

Log Books

Sun, 2008-11-09 14:55

Guys whats the difference between this and the log books fisheries are doing currently? No point doubling up on something that already exists.

Good Idea

Sun, 2008-11-09 15:04

Not saying its not a good idea but there seems to be enough trouble filling out the log books and if we add someone on the site needing to collate it all etc it might become a problem as well.

Not sure if we can add info to the logbook that you are a fishwrecked person and let them collate it all.

I feel that if they arent going to pay attention to it written on the logbook then they wont if we submit it from the forum either.

Its the data they want so why not present it in the form they are prepared to use and supply the labour to manage it and if they see 100 log books come in from fishwrecked maybe (big maybe) they will see some benefit in listening or making use of interested people on forums such as this.

Not much interest in logbooks...

Sun, 2008-11-09 15:16

Just signed up for the program, and my logbook number is "1066". Now maybe Andy or Dreamy can clue me in as to how long the logbook progam has been running, or maybe the book numbers aren't sequential, but after all this time if only 1000 books have been issued, and very likely the vast majority aren't being consistently filled out, there cannot be very much data for fisheries to chew on.

I know, something's better than nothing, so maybe it's a wakeup call for more people to get out there and do it. Some might say "What's the point, people like Jill StJohn are only going to twist the numbers around to suit themselves", but what's the alternative? Stick your head in the sand and do nothing?

Piston, good idea with the dhufish database, but it has to be a case of the "more the merrier".

John, can't tell you how long the DoF (Voluntary) Angler Log Book Program (as part of the Research Angler Program (RAP)) has been going, because I don't know. But you can get more info from DoF - have a look here:

http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/macs/research/IntroducingLogBooks.pdf

WOW John, I received my Log Book - Ocean Edition months ago and my number is 1046. If your's is an Ocean Edition, or all editions run in distributed incremental series - that's only 20 more Log Books issued in that time. Cry

Log Books

"Guys whats the difference between this and the log books fisheries are doing currently? No point doubling up on something that already exists."

Hmmmm, yeah, not taking anything away from PB's idea, but see your point Tim.

"...but there seems to be enough trouble filling out the log books"

Tim - when you say trouble, do you mean the 'debate' over what the 'powers brokers' will do with the info? (Just to be clear all - not you Tim, I support Log Books 100% Wink.)

"Not sure if we can add info to the logbook"

Technically, you can Tim, there's a Comments space at the bottom of each Log Sheets with three page-width lines. Though, I'm not sure what value that would add to the Log submission, or what DoF would additionally do with it.

EDIT - Info/layout of Log Books:

Colin I didnt want to take anything from PB's idea either but thought I would raise the fact that this exact idea already exists.

By "TROUBLE" I meant actually getting people to sign up and then fill them out. If they wont do it once why would they do it twice.

The idea of writing fishwrecked in the comments section would be to maybe/hopefully show that the guys and girls of this forum are serious about helping collect accurate data. You are right in that it may do nothing extra but it wouldnt hurt.

Yup Tim - and fair enough too.

By "TROUBLE" I meant actually getting people to sign up and then fill them out. If they wont do it once why would they do it twice.

Tim, thanks for the clarification. Yup, good point, some may feel it's 'easier' in here (though there's an online version of Dof Log Books now I believe - at least in trial - haven't gone into that. BUT, it MIGHT even (sorry PB) discourage people from registering with DoF. Given that there appears to have only been 20 issued in months. (God, I hope that is not true!).

It sure wouldn't (hurt) Tim. Wink (or least I can't imagine why it would).

I think aproximate locations only would be the way to go. Imagine if it WAS FW members access only and then someone saw a boat out on what they thought was previously a secret spot then started to be suspicious on who 'blabbed' from FW (which, of course, probably didn't happen anyway). Easier, IMO, if approx only is given then everyone is 'beyond reproach'.

definitely only approximate locations. As a matter of interest would you think "Lancelin" would be suitable or not ?

A MYSQL database with some

Mon, 2008-11-10 16:31

A MYSQL database with some charting say in a opensource Flash chart would work exposing only say certain data back out might work.

There maybe something in opensource such as a Joomla plug in whiuch would save a tonne of PHP programming and the relational database build.

It would sit as a side install on his server next to the forum CMS.

Obviously Adam would have to implement it which is time and money.

Online recreational fishing database

Mon, 2008-11-10 17:33

We can help alot by contributing to the research in what we catch and where and when we catch it and with what gear - voluntary/mandatory logbooks have been discussed to death so I am not going to delve into it...

Collectively, we hold so much information about our fish - there must be a way to get that information and use it in learning about them.

A little while ago I saw an email about a fellow who is developing an online logbook approach, which includes locational information, so that maps of catch and effort and such can be generated - enormously useful information about the fish and their habits as well as ours.

I have contacted the researcher involved to see if people on this website might be able to contribute. I think it is in trial stage - but there is considerable potential i think, given this idea by piston broke and everyone else who is posting here.

great to see that so many a) do already contribute information, and b) want to contribute more.

I'll let you know what I find out....

Ewan
