Fishing tackle and Accessories that you swear by

This is not a thread intended to advertise but to offer help to other fisherman with proven results with tackle that we use and swear by.

I will start it off with the best fishing knife on this planet in my opinion. I was sick and tired of buying fishing kinfe after fishing knife only to have them go blunt, tips snap, blades rust.

I forked out a few $$$ and bought a Buck 119. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I tell ya what. This has to be the best knife for fishing/hunting. Blade stays sharp for so  long and the knife feels so comfortable in the hand not to mention very intimidating to any potential thieves or trouble makers.

Feel free to ad any fishing tackle and equipment that you love and swear by...

Same deal with headlamps, had heaps that would break or chew batteries so I spent the little bit extra and got a petzl. Best $50 I ever spent, and that was one of the cheaper ones!

After getting a mid priced headlamp there was no turning back. I don't even use a gas lanten anymore, just a headlamp each and a couple of LED torches around the camp .

Good fishing backpack.When I

Mon, 2011-09-05 15:10

Good fishing backpack.

When I fish with mates, they mostly have carry bags or plano boxes. I sling on my backpack and end up carrying half their gear for them coz I have free hands!!

Those ones with attached chairs are great. I either remove the chair, leave it in the shed, and use the straps to strap on those PVC rod holders to the side of the backpack. That way it will even hold my small rods while walking along the beach. Or I keep the chair and after fishing for 4 hours, everyone is jealous coz I have a nice comfy chair to relax on while rigging up. Awesome.

knife and ezy lap diamond stone back in 1990, fantastic knife and I can't remember the fillets that it has taken off, and my twinpower 8000 and monster mesh rod, have had so much fun with it on big fish.

Abu Baitcast

Mon, 2011-09-05 18:34

My Abu 5600C4 is a ripper, just love it.

As for headlamps I didn't like the Lenser with the battery on the back and the light on the front, with the wiring between the 2, too complicated. Have a couple of Princeton tecs that I swear by.

1.I'm with Chan on the belt

Mon, 2011-09-05 20:51

1.

I'm with Chan on the belt holstered pliers (I also wear a small folding knife on the hip) - saves me from having to move about the boat every time I need either if I'm not next to the bait board. Used often.

2. Lighting is covered on the boat but have used headlamps plenty of times when returning from land based hikes after dark (a mate who didn't have one went arse up and could have been seriously injured on one trip so definately adds to safety when carrying loads over rocks).  3.

- something to keep the beer cold for that beautifully cold beer on the way in or when cleaning the boat or catch (not to excess obviously). - goes without saying - never drink warm beer

3. the large Glow sticks always come in handy if batteries fail etc.

4. HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERY ONE GETS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING - I also carry one of those thin foil type body warming bags/sheets religiously for when the shit hits the fan and you or someone else ends up soaked and cold/suffering from hypothermia or stuck overnight due to injury etc.  Haven't had to use it yet - touch wood.

(I did use one on a school camp years and years ago when my sleeping bag ended up soaked during the canoe trip out to camp on a island - shared it with the fat kid of the class (who's sleeping bag was also wet) - it kept us both warm over a very cold night - was a saviour at the time and I have carried one ever since). Cost about $4-5 bucks and takes up very little room - is defanately a potential lifesaver when you consider hypothermia is one of the biggest potential threat on the water.  get one from a camping store or even KMart etc.

Cheers

Paul

Black Magic Equalizer

Tue, 2011-09-06 06:13

I just did my lower back really good (two weeks in hospital). The black magic equalizer is a harness and gimbal setup that takes all the stress off of the lower back and allows you to use your legs. Kind of feels like being in a game chair but standing up. To keep chasing big fish this is the only real option I have found. As soon as I put it on I knew that those sore days at the end of a successful fishing trip are now pretty much over. Definitely worth a look at if you suffer from lower back pain.

Protect your eyes...

Wed, 2011-09-07 23:04

Personaly I love my Maui Jim polarised sunnies but there is heaps of others that are just as good out there... As your eyes are the only set your gona have and they don't fix if you cop a stray hook in em then they are the most important things to take with you on any trip especialy for the fly fishermen and those with clumsy dekies not looking where they are swinging their rods... the other benefits being they protect from the sun and the difference that a good polarised lense makes for spotting fish in the water is just huge.....

Good idea for a thread by the way.....

I agree with the Sunnies

Thu, 2011-09-08 08:01

Everyone MUST have a decent set of polarised sunnies.

My kit is pretty simple really. Being land based the regular kit comprises the following:

  1. Decent utility back-pack suitable for carrying most stuff as well as a couple of rod holders and water bottles
  2. A spool of 20lb, 40lb and 60lb fluro leader
  3. A box of 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0 Tarpons (I make all my own gangs)
  4. A box of sinkers (various sizes)
  5. Some decent swivels
  6. My knife is a Butcher's boning knife made from German steel
  7. My headlamp - not sure of the make
  8. Some FAT-R poppers
  9. Everyone should have a decent set of pliers

Not a lot more required really... I check my stocks often and top up as necessary. Then the bag just gets thrown in the back of the Landy ready for the next effort.

Gotta give a shout out to the LED lenser H7. People freak at how bright it is, espcially walking through early in the morn or late at night. Good on batteries too if you use it when needed.

A box of sea sickness tablets on your boat!! Nothing worse than being out on the water catching fish whilst your decky is crawled up and spewing their guts.
