Fishing in Perth March 2016
Hi
Got a few mates visiting Perth for a conference next year from the Eastern state and they want to do a bit of fishing.
Just wondering whatwhat I should consider around March ?
1) chasing Dollies around the Fad ?
2) Jigging for sambo and dermesal fish
3) popping for whiting down in Mandurah ?
4) trolling for Mackie ? Tuna ?
5) go to the rotto trench or the garve yard and try out luck there ?
most will be catch and release so do they still need a fishing boat license ?
also I have not seriously fish for the last five years, need to find some spot fast
can anyone recommend a setup Sounder /transducer combo that can show good ground with boat travelling around 20 knots , I was hoping to do some scout trip to see if I can see some good ground around Rotto before March comes along.
Any tips is greatly appreciated.
cheers

I think you will struggle to
I think you will struggle to find any sounder that will be accurate at 20 knots (I'm no expert on this matter and am happy to stand corrected). As for the need for a license as long as one person one board has a fishing from boat license that's all that's required, just bear in mind that if you bring anything in to shore then you are limited to the bag limit for the number of licenses on board (ie 1 license 2 demersal fish, 2 licenses 2 demersal fish etc).

Plenty of units will pick up
Plenty of units will pick up ground at 20knts. I'm running simrad Evo 2 with a B75H tranny and I pick up bottom spots at 27knts.

My 585 reads great at close to 30
with the stock standard tranny and potentially even faster, just need fair conditions

thanks guys I heard some
thanks guys
I heard some people claim they can pick up bottom close to 30 knot too
I don't know much about boating but just got an electrician to installed a transom mount 1 KW with a Lowrance HDS 10
but it stop working at around 12 knots.
could be the position of the mount I guess.
now I am thinking perhaps I should use Furuno instead !

Mount location
Transducer performance is largely determined by location. A transom mount is potentially the most difficult to obtain the best performance but it can be done.
I have my transducers mounted in fairings below the hull and I can get a decent bottom reading at 25+ knots.

Lots of choices
All those are potentially good choices.
For the pelagics you mentioned - dollies, mackerel, tuna - a lot will depend on the water temps. There will almost certainly be some dolphinfish at a few of the FAD's, and likely to be southern bluefin tuna about. If the water temps are up at the trench there could be marlin around if you are set up for that.
At least one person on the boat needs a licence even for catch and release.

thanks Willow and
thanks Willow and resurgence.
I will ask the electrician to check the installation again.
is there a way to test it before you mount it ?
Is it possible for you to take a photo of your mount thanks Willow.
just had a look at the forum...man there is so much stuff here to read about...I should have come here first.
Noted about the water temperature..I wanna show case Perth fishing...just so the Eastern boy can be jealous that's all.
I do have a rec fishing license so that will cover the catch and releases.
watch all the show one Fishing WA and the boys at Ocean Side tackle were really helpful.

hey gertcha i have an in
hey gertcha i have an in hull trannie so i can't help you out there. I just got home from an arvo presentation by John Adams at the bunbury power boat club some fantastic tips from him. He is a site sponsor here and his book is well worth the money. You can test yr trannie position but you will need help from a mate trial and error with you driving and him adjusting it's position up or down also make sure it's not fixed behind a strake in your hull as the bubbles created by it will stuff up yr pic others on here may have a better solution tho good luck.
