Fishing Almanac Accuracy

G'day everyone.

Another pesky question of mine.

Who here uses a Fishing Almanac?  Do you find it accurate?  I picked up Tim Smiths Almanac with bite times and tide times the other day.  Some interesting stuff in there besides the times to fish etc with different species, size limits, knots and rigs etc.

Hoping it is accurate, as it will possibly help remove the less productive days on the water.

All useful input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Justo

I have never heard of a fish that could read and therefore know what time its supposed to bite.

If there are no fish there , you are not going to get a bite regardless of what the book says. But then again , you could always blame the book.

Still do ok without turning them on if you are from the old school, landmarks, dripping on your sinker, trailing hooks to find what weed is on the bottom, time travelled X  compass bearings and marker buoys if you get a fish.

Regularly go out without turning the sounder or GPS on, it all depends if you are new school or old school.

Compass bearings, landmarks, dripping on your sinker, trailing hooks to snag up on weed for a sample, marker buoy if you get fish and most of all chronometer and rev counter for measuring speed.

The bulk of the new school are not aware of many of the tricks that can mean still catching fish if their gizmos shut down

thanks for the useful input guys.

Carnarvonite - you raise a good point.  But I'm only 2 years into boating, so experience is something I'm yet to gain.  If I can help minimise the less productive days, I'm going to enjoy the limited amount of time I get to spend on my boat.  Usually you are a wealth of knowledge, but in this case making smart arse comments about fish not being able to read is absolutely no help at all.

Thanks again,

Justo

I have checked them before after a really hot bite or session and they do seem to reflect good bite times,  but i would still just go whenever i can!

I go wheneva work lets me and conditions are good, i use the solunar times but dont let them dictate when i fish.In saying that i have found that they are reasonably accurate.Tides4fishing is a great site and check it everytime i am venturing out. Try and use everything available to you it cant hurt.

John ya crusty old bugger lol,how can you say that fish cant read when they hang out in schools all the time ? I think the main drama would be the paper getting to wet.

Anglers Alamanac!

Fri, 2013-04-19 01:03

Who here uses a Fishing Almanac?

Anglers Almanac (Yellow book), myself and my step-bro who is a wetliner skipper!

Do you find it accurate?

Absolutely!

Hoping it is accurate

Its been based on over many years of commercial fishing and their dialog!

The Anglers Almanac I use is very good, It doesnt say on a white day you wont catch fish and likewise a black day will go off ...... its about having good ground/fish on the sounder and the Almanac phase will tell the rest!

My step-bro is involved in wetlinning and he uses it as for me, I use it with Pink snapper, Mulloway, Wreck fishing and demersal fishing in particular!!

Fri, 2013-04-19 11:18

Its an accumulation of factors (old school knowledge) such as tides, sunrise and sunset, moonrise and moonset, and moon phases. When these things line up you get the good predictions, when they don't, bad predictions. Local weather and fish species (behaviour etc) play their part as does many other factors, but the guides are a 'rule of thumb'  for supposed fishing times

Any comments on the differences please?

Sun, 2013-12-08 23:52

Anyone got any comments about the significant differences in bite times given by the Yellow "Anglers Almanac" and "Tom Smith's Almanac".

Both are on sale in Tackle shops and claim to give the optimum bite times, but I have noticed there are big differences between the two.

The bite times are in agreement (if 21 minutes are added to the figures given in the Yellow Alamanac), but the best days are often completely different !?

I have in the past only used the Yellow Almanac so never noticed this previously.

Confidence

Mon, 2013-12-09 12:57

I find that confidence has something to do with a good days fishing. When I was younger I used it, but going fishing (not just on a boat but Landbased) starting with a "white" day would just sap confidence IMO. Makes for a bad days enjoyment.

Now I look at it after, never before. I would go fishing when I want to and can, not when the book says, and still get fish. I only look at the almanac after a hot bite to see if it corresponds, which more often in my recollections dont.

Have always thought that fish have to eat, and if a well presented target is placed infront of a fish, why would it think "its not diner time??"

I think fish feeding has to be opportunistic as food dont line up at certain times to be eaten, BUT there is peaks especially obviously related to tides etc

Mon, 2013-12-16 22:16

Regarding my post above on 8th Dec, as an example take last Sunday 15th Dec:

The Yellow Almanac rates this day as a black day, ie exceptionally good for fishing, whereas

Tim Smith's bite times rates it as only 7/10 for saltwater ie good but not exceptional.

There are many other such discepencies between the two guides, both of which are supposedly based on the same theory.

Anyone know the explanation for the differences in the predictions ?

Brunch ?

Tue, 2013-12-17 18:06

That's even more discouraging then, because the Yellow Almanac predicted the major bite time (for Monday 16th) to come on at 9.53 am,

while Tim Smiths guide predicted a major bite time starting at 10.13 am.

Your observations then would suggest that BOTH almanacs are a massive load of horse c*ck unless you have early lunches...

Yes I am hopeful there is some truth in these Almanacs, but Im wondering why there are such big discrepencies between the "Yellow Almanac"  and "Tim Smiths Tide and Bite Times", both of which are on sale in

many tackle shops.

I guess I have gone off topic and maybe should have started a completely new thread; it's the difference bewtween the two almanacs I am wondering about, and whether anyone

knows which one is more accurate from their own observations, or why there are such big discrepencies between the two. As I have pointed out there are many "black days" in the Yellow Almanac, and many

excellent (9/10) days in Tim Smiths Almanac which do not agree with each other.

I use the common yellow one

Tue, 2013-12-17 20:10

I use the common yellow one available everywhere.I thing there are 10 or 15 old copies laying around the shed.I use it as a guide, its great when you have been out for a few hours and only got nibbles, ready to give in and the bites come.

I use it both land based and boat based.
