first sea trial question

Hey
I've recieved a PM from a member has seen the boat he wants and likes. There are concerns about the boat being underpowered.
"I will go for a water test, and take someone along to help load up boat.
However my only experience driving boats is from my Skippers ticket, how do I tell if the boat is underpowered.
Cheers for the advice"
I have answered , but I'd love some more input from those with more experience in these things.
cheers fella's

best way would be to give it
best way would be to give it good throttle and see how sluggish it is or quick and how quick it gets up on the plane. what size boat and motor is it , is it glass, pressed or plate. answering these questions will help others if it is underpowered

Certainly take a few people,
Certainly take a few people, need at least three on board to simulate two anglers and a couple of jig bags ;)

read the max horsepower plate
Simple grayzee, read the max HP plate, install lightest motor that matches that HP, add fuel, gear, crew and hang on!
Seriously that is about as hard as it gets - if you only fish two up and dont do long trips with lots of camping gear etc then you can certainly get away with the lower end of recommended but in my experience if you can afford it better to put the biggest motor that you can on.
As far as sea trial goes, I like a boat that snaps onto the plane, simply because if you are offshore and need to punch through a green wave or out run a steep one I want to know my boat can do it.

if the prop is right it will
if the prop is right it will be ok
make sure the boat gets up on the plane at 8ish knots
check the max rpm at full throtle should be around 6000
and id say 35knts give or take 5 each way
getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

Fair do'sthe reason I was
Fair do's
the reason I was concerned was , a mate had a 5.42 signature with a 115 yammy 4st on back. it was underpowered when loaded up and needed a foil.
loaded up water test is still the go I think we can all agree.

There is a lot more to it
There is a lot more to it than just being underpowered. Your mates HS 542 with the 115 could do with a foil as the weight is heavy. That would cause the arse to drag but thats not underpowered. It also has to do with engine setup, ie height, prop size and prop style nowadays is also a consideration. That power on that boat will be ideal. The 100hp Yamaha pulls very well and even for skiing would be ideal. Very nice boat, i wish i had one like that to sell..
As for a water test you need to do lots of things, like check for drift, stability, into a sea, with a sea, side on, gear selection, access to anchor, fishing position, driving position, sitting and standing, check for water spray, check prop size so wide open throttle that it is getting full revs, check for instant power (no lag or hesitation indicating carbs or stale fuel,) check running temp at speed and at ideal, check electronics, sounder and radio. Loading and unloading of trailer is important, check trailer with boat of. The list goes on.

also if you pick a day that
also if you pick a day that is roughish you will get a better idea of what it will handle like. no point in taking it out on a calm day as all boats will behave themself. got to give it stick against and with the swell, that way you know if the boat will hold line or get thrown about. nothing like the feeling of the back of your boat getting pushed sideways in a swell knowing there isnt much you can do but give it more power if you have it
