FIFO...finally

well its only taken about 6months, but I have finally secured a fifo job. in training as we speak and will be for another 2 weeks and then its off to Yandi(rio tinto). I will be doing power line construction in a variety of machines. only prob is the 4/1 shift, but to get a start had to take it. its gunna be hard not fishing as much but when im home I will hammer it as much as possible. so my question to you lot is..... how to keep sane in the 4 weeks with no fishing?? and how many times do you FIFO's come home to shitty weather and get no fishing at all? I have got myself a laptop for site, i cant miss out on the F/W stuff, i would go round the twist totally. cheers ron edit; had to can my exxy trip as well, had to choose between the job or exxy.....the job won!

Mon, 2013-03-25 21:40

my roster is 5 weeks, but then its 5 weeks off, plus another bit accumulated during the year.

Just a trade off I guess. I plan alot of trips etc while away, plus also take reels with me to service etc.

Yep happens all the time, watch the weather while you're away and wish you were in Perth, as soon as you come back it blows it's tits off and you get blown off the water. Can get really frustrating sometimes. But congrats on the new gig.

I do 3 on 3 off offshore now

Mon, 2013-03-25 22:33

I do 3 on 3 off offshore now but when I started I was doing 9 and 1 at area C just over the hill from yandi! The best thing you can do is not even look at the wether until 2 days before you get home. I take a box of hooks few bags of 3way swivels an sum line an tie a s&$t load of rigs. Re dress all my jigs and spend hours looking at sounder turning, transducer specs ect..

 Thats the other thing there

Mon, 2013-03-25 22:34

Thats the other thing there mate,

You get a group of like minded individuals around you fairly fast, as long as you keep the intake to a level you can handle a few beers at night down the wet mess is always a good way to make the time pass fast.

For me there is no issue, Im on a ship so I just stay at work till I need to sleep then I go pass out.

Nice being in a 1 man cabin

Take some gear and spend

Mon, 2013-03-25 22:41

Take some gear and spend spare time making up rigs and practising knots. Little zip lock bags are great for keeping the rigs in and when you bust off or lose a rig you`ll have plenty of spares to whack straight on.

Couple of beers of an evening helps alleviate the boredom. Just dont get too pissed and hit up Ebay. That place loves drunk fisherman. So many shiny things to buy.

Yeh good advice there, learn how to start downloading movies too, you'll need it to kill time!  Ipads are good or if your like our crew, I phones and galaxies, movies all the time, games anything to keep the mind sorta ticking over!  Night 8 of 14, ZZZZZZZZZZ.

Oh yeh, congrats mate, once your in its amazing the opportunities that open up if you are willing to play the game.

Rotation

Tue, 2013-03-26 05:53

Good stuff Ron congrats on the new job.

biggest thing I found when time off was making sure I had people organised to do stuff with.

I did some sh*t rosters, 12&2, 8&3, 4&4....but as long as I had someone to play with during the "off" time, it could work alright. Of course the off time goes much quicker than the on time.

Yep this is very true. You wouldn't believe how hard it can be to find a deckie mid week. But the good part is you get the ramp almost exclusively to yourself coz everyone else is at work. Double edged sword...

Startn somewhere.

Tue, 2013-03-26 07:14

Been in the mining for 17 years and promised myself

its even time rosters or nothing, 12 years rio, 2on 2 off, 5 years boddo , 1on 1off

not knocking anyone out there giving it a go , startn somewhere, but

I always get the feeling that we end up with the rosters we deserve

, as in if companys couldnt fill crappy roster jobs , they may just change them, just a thought

take plenty of fishing mags mate, and sometimes , just sometimes you will arrive back for a week of perfect weather

when everyone else is working, ------arh the serenity-- ( at the ramp!)

Congrats on the job mate!

Tue, 2013-03-26 09:05

Congrats on the job mate! Stick it out for a whilst and eventually you'll get onto a better roster, think of the money you'll save (providing you stay clear of online shopping) im quite lucky I do 2wks on 2 wks off however it can get expensive in those 2 weeks if its good weather but who cares right? as for not going crazy having fishing withdrawals, I found a few blokes who are just as passionate about fishing as myself, theyre usually in the same boat and happy to talk fishing for hours.. Thankfully I can sooth my withdrawals by wetting a line whilst im at work too!!

I think I can top all those rosters. I'm on 3 days on 4 days off at Telfer. When I was at woodie woodie I had a hand line and used to catch fish in all the water trapments wich passed the time nicely.

They helped keep me sane on 4/1, stick it out cus if your keen as mustard most guys usually get a chance to move onto a better roster. in the last three years ive been through a variety of rosters. Biggest thing i could say is plan your rnr and don't overoad it, i know too many guys who have bought yaks and bikes and kites and all manner of toys but have never used them. keep it simple clean the house and smash two days in, under or on the water. also congrats its nice to hear a local getting a gig.

Yeah mate i just been in tomprice for 12months best thing i did once ur up there you can pick and choos fifo jobs as you please, also there were many times i flew back and the weather was crap but youll get used to it haha, one tip is put a limit on your credit card as when you get bored up there or get "red dust fever" you tend to take it out on ebay and other sites, exspecially on shift change (from day to night shift) haha

Other then that i think youll love it
