Eagle rays!

Went for a lil fish down at pk jetty Monday morn to get some baits ended up catching atleast 30 nice sized whiting and 8 mullet was also tryna land me my first eagle ray which ended with verry little to no success. Lost 3 in total, 1st one spat the bait before i could get to the rod to hookup, 2nd my brother just about got spooled instantly with 300m of 20lb n 3rd raped me on my 4000bg n 7-15kg rod with locked drag!
These fish are a awesome sport fish and id like to know where they get all the power n speed from

Well done on the whiting. Ah the old eagle ray, they do put up a decent fight but soon become a pest if your chasing mulloway, snapper etc. The power is self explanatory once you see one swimming at speed, it's "tail" comes in the form of two huge wings down the side of its body which are very powerful.

Never been a pest for me
I have done heaps of early morn n night fishes but never come across one unless targeting them yesterday i had fresh whole dead mullet out in the same area as me beother n he got the first 2 runs with only a dead buttery as bait. I later then put on a buttery n got a run within minutes. I have only ever hooked em on butteries so have never really been a pest for me

we often see eagles in the Mandurah estuary when netting for mullet, they can get a little to friendly while cleaning the net out chasing a free feed haha

When cleaning the net they will sneak right up against you and scare the living hell out of you while they help themselves to your catch.

Thanks for the tip mate. I/we have hooked them on basically every type of bottom (sand, rocks, reef etc). I also thought they were found mainly around sand...
Hutch's burley (Shorecatch) that he brings along must be a strong attractant to make the pesky buggers swim over reefs to get to my hooks!! Lol

Don’t know how much truth’s in it .. but apparently a large hole punch through the flaps makes clayton’s scallops . I know the one’s from fish and chips look and taste a bit suss along with the dodgy crab sticks that I was told was possibly tripe mix

Nothing wrong with stretching the arms on an eagle ray if it's a slow day on the beach! It's a great way to put a smile on a beginner fisho's face too.
Plus it's a great learning curve for novices. Shows the importance of knot/rig strength, drag settings and how to land a stubborn fish in the surf. Better learning from your mistakes on a bloody ray so that you're ready when that trophy shows up!

Im glad my days of targeting rays are done, but as said its a vital part of improving as an angler so all the best with that Jimbob!
Eagles are best for sure with jumping and direction changes but gee they make a mess of all your lines on the boat when snapper fishing!

I am somewhat of a stingray specialist.
I just go to the beach, targeting Mulloway and you guessed it stingrays. I can find them anywhere, reckon I could catch one in a roadside puddle.
10 to 15kg surf rod and an Alvey 650 soon sorts them out. Probably a bit overkill for the whiting though. Can be a pain flipping the big ones to get hooks back.
Lob out a tailor head on a 8/0 through the jaw and you will get a hookup if there is an eagle ray within 3km.
