Downrigger / Electric reels
Submitted by Betz on Fri, 2013-03-01 09:09
Hi all,
I am considering investing in a downrigger for better coverage when trolling and it occured to me that it might be possible to use an electric reel and bent but rod with a downrigger bomb as an occational downrigging system.
Has anyone tried this? Would it work?
The expense of both a downrigger and an electric reel is a bit much for how much I would use them so just tryig to save a few bucks and have both options available.

possibly
was cosidering it myself. ive run leads up to 3.5 kgs on the tanacoms and epochs at full power and had no issues with the drags slipping so i dont see which a down rigger wouldnt work.

I am sure an electric reel
I am sure an electric reel would handle it but you would need to put a top shot in the order of 200lb+ braid onto the reel to take the load. The drag downriggers create is considerable. As far as the rod goes I would think 37kg would be a minimum. If you give it a try make sure you have very secure rod holders. Quite franky it seems a bit of a recipe for disaster, but yes it could work.

You may like to check these out
I have used these in the past and whilst they may not go as deep as a downrigger they do get down there. And once again they pull hard.
