Dirk Hartog Island

Hi there.

I'm heading up to Dirk Hartog Island in June to stay on the island for about a week.  Has anyone fished it before, and can offer some advice.  I'm taking up an 8 foot Ugly Stick, 6-8.5kg, with a Penn SS8500 loaded with 15kg mono.  Also taking a Live Fibre 7 foot, 8-10kg rod.  I've got a Penn SS6500, with either 10 or 15kg on there, not sure yet.

Loaded up with all the usual lures, shallow swimming lures, metal slices, poppers, leadhead jigs and SP's.

We are staying at "The Block", so I am assuming there will be mainly cliff fishing (yes, we have a cliff gaff), but not far from Turtle Bay either, so I'd say those are the two spots we'll be fishing.

Any advice or tips would be great.

Cheers

hi mate, we have never fished from land around the island but when fishing from the boat out from turtle bay you can see some nice beech areas and from what we have been told you can get some decent fish from that area not sure about the outside

Yeh mate i stayed on the island for a week at the North end...near turtle bay. Make sure you are self supportive as there is nothing up that way at all. Generators, fridges all the usual remote gear is required to be sort of comfortable. If your staying in the huts much better and if you take a generator the huts have been wired for lighting and power so you just connect your generator in and away you go. Spare tyes a must we spiked two tyres on the trip north up the island

Most of the fishing we did was on the west side and we found it to be the most productive. All types of fishing avail bottom, balloon spinning. If you want to fish the bottom take a very stiff rod (broom stick) and don't muck around being sporting. The baldies will nail you every time.

We lost a heap of gear but caught some awesome fish.

Be very careful in any type of swell as the rocks are pretty dangerous.

Pulled some trout out of turtle bay and heaps of just size pinkies(great for dinner each night)

Search out the aquarium!!!!

Have fun

Hi guys.

Another question.

Is it possible to launch a cartopper from Dirk Hartog Island, and if so, where would the best places be?

Cheers.

the aquarium is south of the block, good cliff fishing, plenty of baldies, spanish flag, and a great spot for mackies. i found the spanyid raider lures in 125gm size were dynamite with the spanish macks, and sharks, and she shark mackerel loved the 30-40gm gold twisties. good spot to launch any boat would probably be sammies beach, just take care with the car the sand can be pretty soft there. along that beach is pretty good for yellowfin whiting and mullas, there's a few other spots like urchins and the cape north of turtle bay which are pretty good baldy spots. put it this way its pretty dam hard not to find a good spot on that island! so many options so little time
