depends what size split rings

depends what size split rings you have. For big rings, the Black MAgic Fishing Pliers are the way to go - for smaller rings, hard to go past the smith split ring pliers.

 Owner produces some great

Owner produces some great ones too for heavy duty use. Bear in mind no matter how expensive the plier is, you still need to look after it- rinse in freshwater after use and generous coat of Inox.

you can tie direct to split rings using a loop knot, if the lure don't have a split ring then straight to tow point.

i prefer to tie a loop to a miniature snap to allow swift change of lures. Typically I go thru a dozen lures in a sesh.

For popper and stickbait then tie leader into solid ring or swivel then split ring- lure.

You should never tie straight

You should never tie straight onto a split ring, the mono will chew out if it goes over the split.

Another +1 for the owners.I

Another +1 for the owners.

I use the GP60. Have had them for around 3 years and they come on the boat with me every single time, still working great. Just have to take Eric's advice and INOX them pretty regularly (I do mine every 3 or 4 trips)

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Go the Black magics

Thu, 2012-12-06 11:56

Yes they cost a bit, but have bought 2 and have had them on the boat for 4 yrs without one issue, and I remove hooks with them. Have a quality braid/line cutter, and crusher.

Cant go past them.

I dont like the Owner as it has failed me twice and also corroded. Blah.

Pair of $3 sidecutters from

Thu, 2012-12-06 12:28

Pair of $3 sidecutters from Supercheap will do just nicely for your purposes Craig. Easier just to cut the rings off & chuck em. You know my opinion on split rings attached to tow points (get rid of them) but do keep in mind that this can change the little lures we use from suspending to floating. A snap is a decent alternative if you get rid of the ring first. Adding a snap to a ring will also change many of the smaller suspending lures we use into slow sinkers so getting rid of the ring & attaching direct to the snap is preferable. Tying a loop to a split ring is not a good idea, unless you check it constantly it's only a matter of time until the line works it's way around the ring & your lure goes flying off into the distance. Apart from that a loop on a ring is just pointless because it can't enhance the lures action. If you want to tie directly to a ring use a standard blood knot or half blood or whatever the hell it's called & tie it to the ring in the gap between the two cut ends so that it's only tied around one strand of the wire.

I had a pair for donkeys, you

Fri, 2012-12-07 06:34

I had a pair for donkeys, you can buy those with about 1000 different brand names on them these days, I think Fisherman were the originals.

My only complaint is thatthey are too big, you don't need something that size unless you're fishing for GTs, so try something smaller like the owners.

I would stay away from them

Thu, 2012-12-06 23:23

I would stay away from them mate I bought a pair not long ago and was so happy for 2 fishing sessions. All my mates were jealous that I got a good pair for so cheap. Then they literally fell apart just buy a good pair the first time and they will last u much longer
