Submitted by Tchampney on Fri, 2013-05-10 14:53
Hey all! I'm after some feedback. This is my 4.5m tinnie I have a 40 on the back. I'm keen to get to Coventry reef in it and do some bottom bouncing. How would it go out there? What's the max wind? Swell? Seas? Etc.. Please help any advice/feedback is muchly appreciated! :)

Just gotta pick your day.You
Just gotta pick your day.
You would want a pretty flat day for your size tinny but in saying that I've seen plenty of fellas out there in rigs smaller than yours.
If your going in close to the reef watch the swells - they can come out of nowhere - and it is one gnarly piece of rock.
Need your EPIRB too.

No probs, as Red dog said
No probs, as Red dog said pick your days and watch the swells. I have a 4.45 stessco tinny with a 40 hp on the back I've been there and beyond in that. A great sized boat take it anywhere cheap to run, and tough
Good luck

Yer I picked this baby up
Yer I picked this baby up for 3400 which I thought was a bargain. Just put a garmin 400c sounder in it and got all my safety gear yesterday. Is it best off to just drift out there because anchoring up might capsize a small tinnie? I think ill just wait for day forecasting 5knots and head out or do you think I could go in 10-15?

over 10
will not be much fun at all.
first few times you go out and the wind is predicted around that just plan to stay in close and take it as it comes.
its all good to be heading out with a 10 -15 breeze then when your at your spot you turn around and realise just how a short chop will work you over and that isn't fun. there will be plenty of days in the year that you will be ableto go out as far as the fuel will get you there and back so be patient.

Hey mate,Nice tinnie that
Hey mate,
Nice tinnie that will be a capable small boat offshore, as said by others you need to make sure you check your forecasts,
If its calm you can flog it and get out in no time, however when its rough and choppy it slow going and wet.
If the wind is side on your going to get wet.
I fish from a 4.65 Baltic Marine Fibreglass Dinghy which I have taken upto 10km offshore but as ToT has said you need to be
patient and check your forecast for the right days, no fun fishing from a boat in shit weather anyhow.
I anchor my boat, however I do not anchor anywhere near a breaking reef and when I do anchor I let out an absolute shitload of rope.

Nice tub Tim with the 40hp
Nice tub Tim with the 40hp you'll be doing wheelies .. as stated it looks to be a capable boat I have no idea how far coventrys is out .. buts it's just gaining confidence in the boat and your own skippering in different conditions I think .. thereafter you'll know .. anchoring wise it's typically a 3 to 1 scope .. good luck , hope you get some fish .

Its easy
Hey Tim
Its easy, lauch at Carlisle street Shoalwater, (Beach Launch) Head out between Penguin Island and Ist Rock, when you get to first rock go North to avoid the reef, once outside the reef head west toward the Five Fathon Bank, where you see it breaking that is Coventry reef, you can fish inside this for whiting if the swell is up, otherwise go to the outside but unless you have a reef anchor, drifting would be you best option. Some good ground and lots of different fish.
Good Luck

Anything up to a 1.5 mtr
Anything up to a 1.5 mtr swell. Maybe even a 2 mtr swell once your really familiar with the area.
As for winds, definitely look for days when the easterly is forecast to blow for the majority of the day and not over around 10-12knts. Then at the first sign of the sea breeze, start to cruise in. The best time is ussually the hour or so while the wind is swinging and creates a nice glass off.
With a 40 on the back and launching from Port Kennedy, it would only take 15 mins to get in if it's not too bumpy.
And be prepared to persevere through the wrasse and the snags.

TC best thing I did was grab
TC best thing I did was grab a copy of a chart of both Warnbro Sound and Cockburn Sound.
Shows the outside reefs - everything. Good investment if your going to be spending some time here.
You've also got the Murray reef system which extends all the way from The Sisters (that last little group of islands you see out from Long Point) right down to James Service
reef out from Mandurah.

I bought mine years ago from
I bought mine years ago from a tackle shop in Rockingham but they are no longer there.
You can buy them from the dept of transport website.
About $33 for the chart or $44 laminated - well worth the investment
