Animal Rights

Fishers are not immune to animal rights, catch and release is now banned in Germany and Denmark. With the Animal Rights Party now having a seat in the NSW upper house (8 year term) we will need to be on guard.

It will happen here
They have a good argument against those that don't eat fish but kill them for "fun"

PETA are
PETA are disgusting hypocrites. Some of their adverts are ridiculous, comparing domestic violence to fishing and many other sick images that have nothing to do with their campaign.
Another fanatic group selling lies to get their point across.

You should all try hiking,
You should all try hiking, canoeing or camping you inhumane bastards...
for example.. Hike to your favourite fishing spot, set up camp, get in the canoe and paddle out a large bait, then sit back and eat smallgoods made of animals while waiting for your next catch and release!

Greenpeace
I've heard a rumour that Greenpeace was filming local fishers catching and releasing salmon from a boat recently.

I do question myself...
...when I practice C&R...torturing poor fish for my own amusement and then throwing them back to an unknown fate. And I love it. It's fun. SO THERE.

Not going to bother adding to
Not going to bother adding to 'clicks' by reading the link, though I now assume that it is more humane to kill everything I catch now, rather than putting it back.
With that knowledge, I am off to kill some fish.

Thank goodness abattiors
Thank goodness abattiors don’t have glass walls , out of sight out of mind is what suits the general populous but in this day and age of social media and phone cameras . It’s pretty easy to make a shock and horror movie to sway general opinion , so yeah need to be on guard that’s for sure as they are compiling a lot of ammo and they are coming.

I heard today on 882 6pr
I heard today on 882 6pr the rspca were banging on about rabbit hunting and how it's in humane to do so, I didn't hear the whole interview but doesn't look good for the hunting folk.

The hunting folk
Disappointing to see this mindset ! Fishing is a form of hunting. Many hunters are keen fishos, and as we are seeing the Antis are starting to make noise about fishing. If they ever succeed in putting an end to hunting, their full attention will turn to fishing.
I enjoy both fishing and hunting, the tools are different but the challenges and rewards are very similiar. Both groups share a common interest in enjoying the outdoors and should unite to oppose the extremist Animal Rights movement.
take the road less travelled, for there are fewer dickheads on it...

RSPCA add in Sunday Times
The RSPCA should hang their head in shame at the add they put in this weeks Sunday Times.
IMO it is a blatant case of misleading the general public in that it infers that deer in WA are some how caught up on hooks by hunters.
It is very much anti hunting sports in that it insinuates that non professional shooters go around causing terrible wounds and suffering to animals for fun, these people really need to get a good dose of the truth and see how shooters being allowed into state forests to cull introduced vermin will be of great benefit to native wild life.
If they think that professional shooters employed to cull brumbies donkeys and pigs do the job nice and clean then they must also believe in the tooth fairy.
No other form of vermin control is as selective as shooting, if the animal is not on the list of vermin to be culled then it is not interfered with. You only need to see the non-selective effects of poisoning to really open your eyes, and I'm not interested in hearing about non-targeted species not being affected.
Unfortunately I've seen the effects of poisoning on many stations and it's not good. Anyone who has seen the effects of S A P and strychnine knows exactly what I'm on about.
Very disappointed with the RSPCA they are off the donation list as far as I'm concerned.
To shock people by putting full page misleading distasteful adds in the paper has been a bad wrong decision in my book shame shame shame RSPCA

My family have been hunters
My family have been hunters for years as have those before them, we hunt for food to eat. Are we now expected to change our ways and chew on grass.
I do agree that killing just for sport is crap, and I have a veiw on C&R that most will not like.
Is putting a fish through stress and pain just for your enjoyment right?

Is C&R that bad? I can
Is C&R that bad? I can understand the criticism, but it doesn't seem like it's horrible on the level of some geniunely bad things happening to animals in other areas, industries, etc.

Uncle.
Believe it or not, the animal libbers want foxes trapped spayed and adopted by people for family pets, instead of breeding domestic dogs. I prefer a one shot head shot for a fox.

while we all have different
while we all have different views on just what level of fishing we find acceptable , most fishers are not deliberatly cruel , and do the right thing in either catching fish to keep or releasing the species that can handle it well
thing is these 'OTHERS ;; in our society live around us , many are related to us etc, its quite surprising how quickly this attitude of if you hunt or fish then you must have an underlying need to torture and animal , being mosly male dominated it plays well into the hands of association that many are therefore unconsiously being groomed to become killers and perpetrators of domestic violence etc as we enjoy hurting other creatures or humans
now laugh if you wish and dismiss it at our peril
the world is changing rapidly .......... who remembers duck hunting ??
my dad used to shoot ducks for food , i can still recall him in the late 60s and early 70s often stopping at the edge of the road on the way back from a days fishing , usually near a swamp or dam in the margaret river. yallingup area , he would take the shotty from behind the seat where it lived , grab a pocket full of shells from the glovebox , where they where kept , and sneak off through a fence and disapear out of sight .we would sit in the car and wait till he returned ......our ears straining for the tell tall'' boom boom ''of the double barrel shotty going off , he was often succesfull and we did eat the ducks
now just read that again and see how the world has changed and become so licenced regulated , controlled , banned etc .....and now duck shooting is gone !!!!!!! thats just one small part of a daily life from that era totally changed
he never thought that would be possible in his lifetime , same as we dont think fishing or hunting might follow suit , but they are coming imo on this , and rec fishers /hunters need to be more proactive if we have any hope to protect what we now do
...... education for us to improve the image , self regulate and respond especially via social media is vital if we want to continue into the long term future
image is everything in the media , truth has no bearing on selling an idea or cultural shift nowdays

Extremists!
Sadly, the majority of these animal rights/anti-fishing organisations that we see the headlines for are extremists that will settle for nothing less than all humans being vegans.
Swompa is right not to read the article and add to their clicks.
But back in the real world, us modern westernised fishermen (yep, I'm still politically incorrect) are continually improving and changing the way we fish out of consideration for the future of our hobby.
I absolutely love being out on the water. I can come home with no fish and still have a great day and that mostly comes from my appreciation of what fishing offers.
Do I enjoy the killing and hurting of fish ... no, yet I still fish. But I do continually improve the way in which I fish to reduce the number of fish I kill or hurt.
For example, I now;
- like using metal jigs in preference to bait ... when I use bait it is mostly bait I catch on the day.
- target larger quality fish in preference to quantity of fish ... I would rather go home with one Dhuie versus killing 30 whiting, given the choice.
- improved processing of kept fish ... I try to iki Jimi my fish, but given my lack of ability to hit the brain I generally first knock out the fish with a donga to the head.
- waste little ... I give 90%+ of my fillets away to friends and family that I know will appreciate and eat their gift. I mostly eat the wings and backbones of caught Dhufish. Bigger heads go to a friend for fish soup.
And much much more. My point is, as modern day westernised recreational fishermen, we are mostly considerate, learning, educating and practising in the conservation of our fishing future and I am very confident that our children will grow up with a better respect and understanding of our nature than some keyboard warrior who believe all meat eating humans are scum.
(NB: and good on those who choose to be vegans for their own reasons, but I have no time for those who try to convince me that the human species are herbivores. I'm an omnivore ... live with it.)

Makes you laugh
Let's place heaps of poison baits throughout forests. How many people have seen something die from poison? It's not quick nor is it humane. Getting shot. instantantly dead (most times). Fishing no different . Don't forget the poor old jellyfish they have feelings to:):)

funny thing is someone did
funny thing is someone did some research a while back and came to the conclusion that plants feel pain when cut.
at least we dont eat animals while they are still alive like many predators out there. look at the praying mantis for one. after the male has done his bit if he isnt quick enough the female catches him and eats his head while he is alive
