I think its not so much the fertilizer problem but more the problem of all the stagnant water that sits in multiple ponds or drains along the rivers edge. That water sits in the sun through summer building god knows what kinds of algae then when a tiny bit of rain falls it is enough to push this rancid water out of its sess pools and drains into the river giving the algae alot more water to thrive on. Next time you walk along the rive in areas like redcliffe or ascot you'll understand the amount of nasty stagnant water holding in rubbish ridden sess pools and it'll make sense. Main roads and local governments need to re think their storm water run off drains. Swan river trust get the blame and stress for problems out of their control. All in all for a system that cops as much lressure as the swan i think it would have to be the most resilient system around.

So what is the swan river trust doing
They get a decent amount of money each year to watch the health of the swan and as has been said, this tragedy occurs every second year or so

Not good as t all. Something realy needs to be done. I believe its a result of all the fertilizers that get washed down from up stream.
Growing up in manning the river was an esential part of summer for all the kids in the area. Not now tho
