Airmar P66 to Lowrance HDS 10

Hi, I have purchased a Lowrance HDS 10 and already have an Airmar P66 Thru Hull Transducer in the hull but its hooked up to a Horizon sounder/plotter. Can I cut the Horizon plug off and put on a Lowrance compatible plug to fit the HDS unit? I have a 1KW Thru hull transducer but dont have the confidence just yet to cut a hole in the bottom of my boat. Any recommendations? Some have said that the 600w transducer is more than enough for local fishing around karratha as we dont fish much over 40-50m. Cheers.

Actually you probably can

Actually you probably can recable it, airmar makes the same tranny for different brands, and the only thing that changes is the plug.

Maybe ask these guys?

In any case, the P66 is a cheap one to replace, if youc an;t get a win.

No expert at this mate but I have been doing a bit of chopping and splicing transducer cables lately and looked up a fair bit of info on diffenet sites. Here are a few links that may help you make a decision.

Im not sure if the blue connector is seven pin or not, just count them. If its not the info you want have a look around you should find it.

As per 600w  v,s  1kw even in shallow water the 1kw tranducers have larger element surface areas and more elements and will be a lot more sensitive, so should show you a better detailed picture. Thats what it did with my 600w set up anyway.

Cheers ,hope this helps.

Is the thru hull installation difficult?

Wed, 2012-03-28 12:23

Has anyone done the Thru hull installation on a dual core fiberglass hull? I have the 1KW Tranny but have been stalling to put it in. Any tips or best methods for the hole in the hull and sealing? I have paid the money for it I might as well use it. Thanks for your info guys.

I think there is a doco up on

Wed, 2012-03-28 12:58

I think there is a doco up on the furuno site that shows you have to build an insert tube of fiberglass and lap that in, between the levels. If you just drill a hole through both layers of glass, there is nothing to prevent it compressing, as you do the thread up.

Maybe have a look there?

Thanks Till, that makes sense. Might go and pick up some fibreglass so I can get stuck into it next days off. Been having a look into the hull space where the one is at the moment. Need hands like inspector gadget to get in there. Thanks for the tips.

Which hull is it?

Don't forget there is a lot of lapping you need to do with glass to build the strength.

I've extended / renovated my own house, serviced and maintained my own vehicles and boats in the past but installing a through hull transducer is a job I'd definitely pay an expert to do, might be surprised at the cost if you get a couple of quotes???

Didn't a fella on here recently go through the process and put it all up. I just can't remember who it was, but I think it is/was similar to what you want to do.

Southcity104 did this amazing job

Its not really quite the same as mounting a thru-hull, as his is a wet-faced primary, but it certainly has some overlap.

Here is a snippet from an airmar pdf, but its for the faired tranny, not the smaller thru-hull style which can be mounted square to the hull instead.
