Using teasers

After fishing all these years, I have never used teasers before...

simple question.... How far back behind boat should they be set at?

i usually have a lure just at back of whitewash, and another further back, but no idea where I really should set a teaser!

Depends on the type of teaser. I have a daisy chain of three bird teasers interspaced with some glitterbug floats I generally set my teaser half in and half out of the whitewash. I set it just far enough back that the front bird is on top of the water and just bouncing out now and them rather than spending more time in the air.

Witchdoctor types are best set on a short leash under the whitewash not too far back.

With your lures you might be better having them closer in - that is the front one under the whitewash and the rear one on the back edge of the whitewash. You'll find the wash from your boat will attract fish in its own rights and the fish will be able to spot them better against the background of the wash.
Cheers

As Paul said with a Daisy chain

half in/half out of the wash. I normally had the chain on the Starboard side, and witchie on the port. The witchy again as Paul said about 3-4m only behind the boat. At trolling spped the doctor "dives" under the wash and flashes. Because the wash speads a little wider when you run it off the side of the boat rather than in the middle I have seen other use them a lot closer than I used to up at Dampier. And I have been surprised how often mackies especially hit the daisy so close in. I thus run a short corner SB side just behind the chain with a 4m or shallower lure, a slightly longer deep diver Port side.

I dont have outriggers so only get away with 4 at a time. The Middle lure I run ~20-30m straight behind the wash as it almost clears, and then a shotgun popper or pusher depending on need way back behind the middle. When I say way back as far as needed not to risk tangles, so depends on whether the middle is a DDiver or shallower running temptation.

Still have seen mackies nail the chain despite 4 lures in the water. Some even add a hook to the last pusher(what I use) on the chain, but I dont find that sporty handlining in a fish on the chain, which I have made with 300lb Mono.  My daisy has glitter bugs, CDs (blank) and Birds alternating 3 times and a pusher on the end.

Hope this helps, but I dont think the way I run mine is absolutely correct, as there is so many different setups possible, and they all work.

+1 yep poppers are again

+1 yep poppers are again different and best run on the edge (sides or just back of) the wash, or even a bit further back.  Pushers best run on the leading face (again clean water) of the wake waves as these are best spotted by fish here rather than amongst the wash.

LURES.

 OK.....

Skirts to be ran in the bottom 2/3rds of the front side of the pressure waves created by your boat (wake).....they swim and cup the surface better plus being in clean water.

Hard boddies - distance ranges always have one 5-6 m behind the boat in the prop wash

Teasers:

Witch doctors: they run generally 5-8 m behind the boat, i  run two, for metro macks. Sit two deep divers right behind them (but use your head, and think about lure positinoing and the depth it will go. You want the lure behind the doctor not in front!) mackies are renowned for attaching witch doctors , i have witnessed it first hand. then one in the shotgun postion way back.

Surface teasers: I have birds/splashers/skirt marlin surface teasers. I run them both on each corner, with the short corner positioned right off on them (this is money for bills).

Out riggers:

Out riggers are use to get your skirts out in the clearer water and as well allow you to troll more rods, you have a long rigger and short rigger, obviously these are still going to be some what furter out then the short corner or long corner. generally i mix it up a little, and will use the shorter rigger on the long corner position and vise verser....(so they are some what close together, generally depending on colours of skirts).

trolling skirts needs to be constantly watched and re adjusted. as trolling down sea or up sea can change swimming patterns of skirts.

hope this helps any more questinos mate, dont hesitate to PM.....
