Under gunnel LED lightintg
Submitted by sunshine on Mon, 2013-07-22 10:11
I have done the search of the site but can only find one picture of a members boat and haven't seen many at night using the system.
Question:- red, white or blue lighting - obviously red would be better for night vision but does anyone on this site have photos or can recount their experience ?
Any brands recommended (or found unsuitable so I might rule them out of my list) - how much needed in metres for a satisfactory result as it seems to come in 500mm, 1 metre or longer lengths and how waterproof is it
Any feedback or advice would be very much appreciated

White, ebay, china cheap
White, ebay, china cheap cheap
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

One metre strip from
One metre strip from Whitworths (one strip each side)
White - better for seeing things
Red - better for night vision
Blue -looks awesome and much cooler than red or white.
I only have white. They give off more light onto the boat floor in real life than the pic suggests.

PS you can get the stuff which have modules of 3 leds each around 5cm or so apart rather than the strips - these tend to give a more even/brighter light spread from the covered area.

Korr Lighting
I used these guys, http://korrlighting.com.au there is a thread on here that I posted a while back. Kit was very good and reasonably priced, I'm sure you can buy the light strips cheaper but the kit had everything needed, and also has the handy function of a remote control dimmer as at full strength they are VERY bright. At the same time I mounted up a couple of LED spots and rewired the whole boat, a big improvement.
I see now they have switchable blue/white lights, so you can have the best of both worlds, or perhaps an aquatic disco?

Early morning the blue is so
Early morning the blue is so much easier on the eyes, maybe not as useful for some things.

They look like the Korr ones with two colours
Saw them last night thanks to the link above - as a kit with both white and blue and dimmable looks like the way to go - would have preferred red and white but they are not yet available seemingly but intend ringing them today to double check. The video on their site is also helpful on the ease of installation.
Appreciate the feedback, photos and pm's - really helpful thanks guys !

Just fitted
Just fitted the Korr lights with Blue, white and the dimmer. They look great and were easy to install .
Just one problem , the colour chart they supply for wirring the lights up is wrong. I had to use a multi meter to find the positive and negitve wires.
They were White = Negitive
Blue = positive ( blue lights )
Grey = positive ( white lights )
This is how they were for me , but it would pay to test them first as i fried the dimmer switch as a result of using the diagram provided.
Cheers Grant .

another alternative if you dont want to hard wire your lights
I bought some of those el cheapo $6 led lights they sell they sell at bunnings they are powered by 2 aa batterys they chuck out a surpisingly good amount of good light I stuck some Velcro on the back and bingo installation done I have even accidently hosed them when washing the boat down and they are still going strong funny how the cheap stuff is some times the best oh yeah yes they are made in china funny that

Hmmm wired differently
Fully installed and operational on Thursday, and mine were as I would have expected white is white positive, blue is blue positive and grey was the negative BUT that was not what the diagram showed so it pays to test them first = I used a small battery jusy to check polarity first but I must say very very impressed with speed of delivery and quality of the kit
Tried the dimmed blue on Friday heading out = no effecy on my night vision - excellent and white can easily tie knots even when dimmed down
Highly recommended

Korr Lighting responded:
To my advice to them that the wiring diagram notes were wrong - they were aware of it but apparently there was supposed to be a warning note placed in or on the box and there wasn't ..................so for anyone purchasing one of theses great kits suggest that you physically check wiring polarity and wire up accordingly and not simply follow the instructions.
