Hi all
Well its time to start organising/planning our monties trip we will be going in may next year. This is our first big trip living off the boat so what things should we take and what things have you taken and never used we are planning on staying for 5 days on the islands so need to pack smart. At this stage there will only be 2 of us on my boat.
If there is anyone who might be keen to tag along in there boat send me a pm this will be our first trip up there we have a 3 week window and will be picking the best weather to head up there.
A big thanks to Pricey10 for his advise it was good to chat about it and it will be good to catchup for a beer when we get up there.
Cheers

Be nice
Be nice to the charter operators out there!
If you talk to them nicely, they are quite happy to take a few spare cans of fuel out for you (usual fee applies!) and will help out with fresh water too.
At least I know the crew on my charter there did. Export cans were popular.
Cheers,
BD.

We are going in may.we will
We are going in may.
we will be launching from dampier so we dont need to worry about tides when launching and retrieveing and we will also fuel up there as i wont be able to carry it all with gear legally.
What charter was that browndog. I think im right with fuel and water but it would be great to get a bit of ice mid trip.
Vinnie most of the research i have done people will do anywhere from 250-450kms depending where they left from. We will be taking enough fuel to do 500kms at my worst economy figures.
Cheers

Sounds like your twins are
Sounds like your twins are pretty economic then. Def go for some fully loaded runs for your fuel figures it does make a huge difference and so does pushing into tides!
You should be fine for ice for 5 days with a good esky and some good packing!
But the charters are always good for a chat and help if need be!

I average .9km to the litre
I average .9km to the litre and have had it down to .7 and best is 1.0 this is average cruising figures obviously the more you give it the more it wants to drink but these figures are cruising at around 20knots which is around 3100rpm. They will almost run on fumes idling around. I absolutly love the yammys.
I plan on loading it up and doing a trip out in average conditions prob head to rotto and back from rocko
I will be taking 700l of fuel so planning on the trip over to burn more then normal.

We have a 6.5m ally and
We have a 6.5m ally and normally get 1ltr per NM (1.8km per litre).
We took ~720ltrs over to the Montes and on the trip over & back our fuel consumption was almost double normal (almost 2ltrs per nm).
We left from Onslow and I guestimate we did ~400nm (800km). We put over 40hrs on the motor and that is turning it off whilst drifting. We stayed on the islands for 6 full days but only got out 5 days due to weather.

Still had about ~175ltrs on
Still had about ~175ltrs on board when we got back to land.
Trip over and back was about ~160nm...about 300ltrs of fuel.
Then used about 250 litres over there. Most of the time was flat calm and we could sit on 21knts using 0.9 litres per nm. We did quite a bit of running around once over there.

Good to know, but yes loaded
Good to know, but yes loaded makes a huge difference ( depending on your hull though) have found the lighter hulls use a hell of a lot more but then again the heavier thirstier hulls dont have as much of a increase!

Single vs Twins
I used to notice a big increase in fuel use in my old boat with a single outboard when we were loaded up for Abrolhos trips etc. Cruising RPM would be much higher. Now we have twins and they handle the increase in weight much easier. Twice the torque.

Yeh i ment to add that twins dont have that huge extra fuel usage when loaded. Good point!

Monties
I normally put a chest freezer full of old block ice in the centre of the deck. (tarped) On arival unload chest freezer on land and plug in cheap generator.
Take a block of ice out each day and replace with fillets.
On way over don't push it or you will chew a heap of fuel (you will be overloaded). Listen to the motor and try and get the best speed for the least grunt. The fuel will go a lot further when you are unloaded.
Know your fishing zones. I have been the only boat out there and the fisheries have flown over then returned with a mothership and 7m Niad in tow. They knew where we had been and they love a trip out there.
Good luck - Its a great advenure..

Absolutely brilliant diving
Take the gear - it is very very special with heaps of tropical and green crays. The drop off near Frigate rock (looks like a navy ship from a distance) at the back of Tremoille (sure this is spelt wrongly) Island is one I would highly recommend

The freediving is that good
The freediving is that good and varied that Ive never been tempted to pack all the extra gear and scuba it. Only so much gear you can pack in.
