Today's Sunday Times

I reckon that YTkingie in today's paper looks under 20kgs.  It's still a great catch but I call it for being smaller than the weight recorded.

People pretty regularly comment that the fish pics are a bit sus. There was that jewfish with the stretched neck then the 20lb v's 20kg one from hotbite.

If it was a record, it would hit a certified scale, if its just a pic to show off - we all know fishos are bullsh!t artists :P

hehehe....yeh true Till. We also have an old saying in the tackle industry "convert it to LB's and that's more like it". Now I know that's generalising but it works often....trust me!

I have had a look at the latest FWA, there is one article where a bloke is declared at holding up a "70lb" Spanish Mack and also a "45lb" GT. Using my semi educated eye I reckon the fish pictured would be lucky to be half the sizes mentioned (and I am being generous here). This sort of thing does the writers credibility no good at all

Not sure

Mon, 2008-08-04 09:42

Its certainly a good fish.

He certainly looks like he is a big bloke, but then again 70lbs (31kilo's) would be a BIIIIGGG fish. Surprised
Here is my 17kilo one for comparison.... is it half the size?????Wink
If I had to have a guess (which is all we are doing) I'd give the one in the mag 25kilo's maybe, but pics can always be deceiving and typo's are common. Only the angler knows what it was and you have to be a little trusting as I'd hate to think an experienced  fisherman would lie about his catch in a well read publication. That only happens with the "one that got away" stories.WinkLaughing

Andy, Looking the one that you have hold of then the one in the FWA would struggle to be as big as yours, although I accept that the angler is a big fella.

A mate of mine sent me a picture of a, weighed, 27kg (60lb) mack that he caught in Mackay Qld last weekend and I reckon it would have easten the one in the magazine.

I agree that the fish in the FWA were nice fish, but I reckon that the author (or editor) would have been better off saying something like "Fred with a nice mack" rather than declaring a size.

It is a nice fish, the fisherman presents well doesn't he. I reckon he looks as if he jumped in and wrestled it Steve Irwin style. Stuart says we got covered in crap trying to lift it onto the weighing hook while tryingto avoid it's teeth

The bloke in FWA is holding his "70lb" fish out with one hand under under his belly and the other with a lip gripper, all with a big smile on his face.

Unless I am absolutely positive on weight I never quote one in my articles. A big fish speaks for itself. No need to weigh them.
I used to weigh them in the early days but unless its a spectacular fish, like Kasey's 24kilo one (which busted by 22kilo scales) and we had to use bathroom scales and do some math (24kilo's was conservative by the way) weighing the angler then angler and fish.
Talking pounds certainly sounds more impressive (bigger numbers) but with smaller increments it is harder to get a nice round number like 70 unless it is a guess. I'd say it was a guess which is easy to stuff up if you haven't caught a lot of that species.
We have had fish come over the side where the angler has added at least 5 kilo's to what I think it is.
Its funny how a lot of guys will urge me to call them for 10kilo's just to get into the double figures when most fish may be around the 8 or 9 mark.Laughing
Between about 11 and 17 kilo's the dhuies can look remarkably similar in size, but the difference is generally in the girth.

How much do you reckon the one Danny Green is holding on the cover weighed?

Here's another Big Mack

Mon, 2008-08-04 10:32

I'd say about the same length as the one in the mag, but not quite  as thick in the shoulder at a guess.
Its easier to make a fish look bigger in a photo, but a lot harder to make them look smaller.

Andy, at a guess I reckon it would top out around 12kg. Danny isn't a huge bloke and the camera angle is flattering.

How did I go?

even less maybe

Mon, 2008-08-04 11:09

The point I am trying to make is that by angling the fish you lose the sense of length and with certain fish that can be very important in guaging a fish's weight. If you look at the last two pics, Trevor is supporting the fish behind the anal fin and has his arms spread at 45 degrees, whereas Danny has support at the tail wrist and 90 degree arms. That makes a big difference in length. Trev would be twice the size of Danny (but nowhere near as tough), hehehe sorry Trev.
But if you just focus on the fishes head, because it is so big in the picture you could easily call it for a whopper.Surprised
Definately a nice fish though, as is the "70lb" one.

I agree.. the tale (or should that be tail ) grows every time!!!

Here is a friends big mackie she caught at Exmouth last year July. It pulled my scales to the 25kg stops and we could not get a full ready. BUT it was a big fish!!! We estimated it at 30kg, my son in the picture is 7 years old there and the fish out weighed him!!!!
