Tailor
Submitted by lachieH on Sat, 2014-04-12 17:11
I know that I have been posting a lot of threads lately but I am very keen on catching my first tailor and because its the school holidays I have all the time in the world to do it. I live very close to the mt Henry bridge and do have some 10g halco twisty's and will go whenever I need to.
Have heard that the best time for tailor fishing is at dusk, but will try to pick a change of tide close to dusk as well. Have a rod with a 15-30lb mono mainline I think (not sure) and am probably going put a 30lb leader on (this is the poundage that I have heard works best). Any suggestions on land based locations in the river?

hi, tailor are easy to catch
hi, tailor are easy to catch and very fun on light tackle in the river. some people use halco twistys with alot of luck but if your going for tailor you have to use at least 30lb to 40lb wire about 15 to 20cm. i prefer to use 3 ganged hooks with a whole pilchard unweighted and let sink for about 5 seconds than slowly retrieve or you can drift bait. best time in my experiance is 7pm to 12am. good spots in the river is point walter, canning bridge, blackwall reach but if your fishing out of the river, the best spot is trigg beach were tailor are up to 70cm. 15 to 30lb is good enought but i would go 15lb to 20lb braid in the swan. hope i anserd your question.

I catch tailor all the time
I catch tailor all the time on halco twistys and have never once used wire, nor have I ever had a tailor cut thru my line. My usual setup is reel simply loaded with 15lb line, and I use a 20lb mono trace. Been doing it for years and has never let me down. I use gold twistys, I find them the best. Each to their own tho! All the difference of opinion proves is you can catch them basically any way you want! :)
Good luck mate. (I have landed tailor up to 4kg with no issues - That being the biggest I have ever caught)

I have got a light 4lb braid
I have got a light 4lb braid bream reel with some 8lb trace but that's a bit light for tailor probably
. Will be using the gold twisty and mulies because got both of those here at home ready to use. Will be buying a 30lb trace because it will be used for the moles and the river. Cannot afford both lol. I think I will try the point Walter jetty with lures and mulies. Is the spit good for the tailor? Also on the jetty is there any peticular sides of the jetty that works best for the tailor?
thanks for the help everyone because I really need it. This info really helps a lot.

I've never been cut off by
I've never been cut off by tailor in the river, I beleive this is because they hit the back of the lure first and hence hooked on the back treble,
keeping their teeth away from your line. Ive got them on 4 and 6lb as bycatch, so personally i wouldnt worry.

No need for wire in any
No need for wire in any tailor fishing, you'll put off far more than will ever bite you off. I've landed tailor to 84cm over reef without wire (15lb braid 30lb leader). In the river I use 4lb braid & 8lb leader, no need for any more. In 15yrs tailor fishing the river I've been bitten off a grand total of once. If your line snaps when you strike, your drag is done up way too tight. You should NEVER snap line from putting pressure on with the rod.

Thanks for all the replies!
Thanks for all the replies! I will bring down my bream setup with a golden Halco twisty in a 8lb leader. Will by some 30lb leader. Will use my gang of hooks (is size 3/0 alright) and put a mulie on with a float as I saw in another article. I will start off with the float and if that's not working I will take it off. Thinking that I will reel the bait in slowly when using the float. I have been to the north and south mole a couple of times and have had BIG hits on the rods and have had mulies eaten in half, but have not hooked up yet, so I am going to change to using 4 hooks not 3 (so it reaches to the tail.
on another note, there has been some violence at point Walter lately. Like when the wedding got gate crashed so early that the cake hadn't been cut yet. Has anybody else had issues here at night?

Is the point Walter usually
Is the point Walter usually packed with people or will we be the only people down there mostly? Also I have heard that the waning moon is better than waxing! and the couple of nights before full moon is best. Is that info right?

I wouldn't worry about moons
I wouldn't worry about moons etc for tailor, but wouldn't hurt to make your own records of what works for you. I find they come on the bite just on sunset. As others have said, bream rod will do fine for river tailor. Got a few at the narrows a few nights ago but they were really small, like under 20cm, so not sure if bigger ones are around.

Well, I have had tailor bite
Well, I have had tailor bite my rig off and that was using a 4 ganged hook rig. Must have swallowed the whole thing. That said, it's a rare occurence. These days I fish for tailor with 8 or 10 lb braid casting 40gm metal lures. Sometimes using a 20/30lb leader but often just straight to braid. I have no problem hooking and bringing in tailor to 2kg on a regular basis. Around metro there's no need to go beyond 12lb mono unless you are casting a ton of lead or going after mulloway or deep sea then you need heavier line. Horses for courses. 10gm twisty may do in the river but in the ocean your distance will be cut drastically and you'll get herring most of the time. I size hooks according to the bait. You may find that a 4/0 will be better for the middle gang. I typically use 4/0 except for the tail which I use 2/0. You want the point to be clear out of the body or you wont get a hookup.
If anyone wants 40gm twisty type lure with single hooks, I'm selling them for $3 a piece. let me know.

i find using a small glow
i find using a small glow stick about 40cm above the gangs on a slow retrieve works pretty well (minus the float)

went down to Point Walter
went down to Point Walter last night with a 10g twisty. It could cast a mile! I think about 50-60m. Saying that I didn't actually catch a tailor on the lures. Put out a drifting mulie, rod was too light to cast a mulie properly so only got it 10-15 metres out hoping maybe for a very, very hungry bream. winding the lure in and the rod bends in half basically and I was on! Got my first tailor ever at about 7:30PM. Only 28cm but I was soooo pleased with myself. Casting into the same spot again and nothing for 15 minutes. Casted out to the left of the jetty and nothing either, and off the right didn't get anything. Packed up at about 8:15. We had three crabbing drop nets out but only managed to get one crab. It was a monster though! 2-3cm over the legal for crabs. But we did only catch one so we threw that back aswell. Forgot the camera so no pictures. But I am happy with my first tailor and river crab.
