Hi, Im off to steep point next year for the first time and was just wondering about what live baits and baitcasting baits are available up there. Always good to have fresh bait!
would it be worthwhile bringing a couple of occy pots?
Can you get whiting off the beaches?
Cheers for any comments

In all my trips up there its never been a problem getting bait plenty of whiting, gardies, mullet if you have a net. And plenty of the little butter fish which we normally do well with. And heaps of Charlie courts around the reefs.
Cheers

Bait
roddo is on the money.
with the butter fish use a double patanosta rig with small hooks .
charlie court fillets went well for us recently, also worth taking some crabs with you .
plenty of squid around the weed beds .
a mate of mine swears by NW blowie fillets .

+1
+1 for Butterfish.
Tried a few different baits but the butterfish came up trumps.
Good size fillet on 2 snelled small circles did the damage.
Blacks, baldies & pinkies seem to love em....
Cheers & Stay safe

Chopping
When your filleting fish for bait, cut out the wings and drop them down on a single hook, top bait.

Halfway between Shelter bay
Halfway between Shelter bay and Steep point there's a stretch of rocky beach where you can get hundreds of those Butterfish. You just need a small baitchaser rig.
