Squidding

 Hi Guys

I'm coming up to Perth tomorrow for three days and was thinking of bringing the boat(4.2m runabout) so I can take the old man for a fish.

I see that it is going to be a bit windy so might try for a squid or maybe a swan river fish/crab.

My parents live in Clarkson but I don't mind travelling, even as far as Rockingham. If anyone could give me some advise it would be greatly appreciated.

 Rockingham- Strong Wind

Fri, 2015-11-06 19:39

Rockingham- Strong Wind forecast for tomorrow,so not so good even in close for squid. However three days will look good for Monday around Rockingham waters.

You can choose either side depending on wind forecast, ie Safety Bay side or Mangles Bay side, even across to Garden Island weed banks. Plenty of squid to be caught.

I'm going Tuesday morning -Squid Hunting. Only because the weather is looking better.

Good luck and enjoy pulling them in.

Squidding

G'day Choc,

Still good numbers of Squid around south of Freo mate. Will be blowy, but you will handle that as necessary I'm sure. I would start shallow to get your bearings, find the closest weed banks to the shore near the old Power Station and drift along them ( with a southerly will be easy ). Small to medium size squid there, with the odd big bugger to keep you interested, and in good numbers. Depth will be 2-3m. You MUST be casting across the weed patches, particularly the edges. The squid are not roaming as far into the sand as much as they were a couple of months ago.

Depending on how that goes, move straight out until you hit the 6-7m mark and again, try and find the weed. NOT the solid weed, you need the broken patches. If you have the visibility, you will see what I mean. The best ground at the moment is on the north eastern edge of the Parmelia bank in the 6m approx. range, set up your drift accordingly. Size 3.0 jigs in natural colours have been working very well on that ground, with King George and Yamashita NAEBA (red foil) patterns working for me, but try a few different ones.

Some absolute hooters on that ground if you are lucky, with the odd solid cuttly as well. If weather is ok, and you get enough squid, head straight across from where you are to the eastern edge of the channel and convert some of your squid tentacles and wings into some fat sand whiting! In good numbers recently. Last Saturday and Sunday I fished there and was visited by a 4ft Hammerhead both days. Surely the same shark. Say g'day to him if you see him, was friendly enough. ( He circled the boat for about 10mins each day, I think he was mixing his ambitions up with his abilities...)

If none of that works, you can nearly always snaffle a squid or two along the weed beds at the Henderson Cliffs. Don't worry about the shallow line of weed in this weather, stay on the second bank further out.

Let us know how you go.

Cheers,
Tim

Tim I don't really know these spots you are talking about, where would be the best place to launch?

Woodman's Ramp

Woodman's Point ramp mate, excellent public ramp. 10mins south of Freo. Freo power station is just north of the new coogee development/marina.
