South passage

South Passage Coral Bay.
Deff not the biggest we have faced but bit more than I normally like to tackle with punters onboard.
There was only about a 2m swell running and looked fine all the way up to it till the set turned up.

we got caught last Wednesday
We got caught out by the storm that came early on Wednesday, was hoping to be north end of the Island before the weather came, caught us within 20 minutes around 10am.
was a long and slow day in - very dangerous.

Bums
Bet there was a few bums sucking up the vinyl on the seats big time. Nothing worse than getting half way out and a big set decides its time to rear its ugly head.

Reminds me off coming in on
Reminds me off coming in on the Mahi Mahi with Bernie Vale and we nearly broched with all punters on board. Not good either way.

been there, done that, never good
But a good move to hit reverse and pull back a bit from the danger zone while you could. Trying to turn wouldn't have ended well. The swell has been pretty big all week here at Kalbarri, won't go down. i worked the crayboat out of South Passage one year, May to June, and didn't see it break once. We were leaving in the dark, and would check it on the radar before we pulled the pick .

We went up there after the river closed off from a flood
We were landing on the rocks at Red Bluff, going to Gregory for fuel.So we packed up and went . We started in the 42 fathom ground which runs from just north of False Entrance rght up to the Passage. Very little inside along there there unless you go right in against the cliffs. Ground was a bit different up along the Island, we went about 10 miles (?) up. Out to 50 fathoms, and in as far as 21 fathoms. Also worked the 50 fathom drop out the front, and found a long skinny bit in around 65 fathoms that ran across the front of the passage before it turned and went in towards Steep Point. Still have all my marks, caught lots of Reds in pots along there.
42F=77m
50F=91m
21F =38m
65F=118m

Wrong South Passage. I missed the "Coral Bay" bit. I only know one South Passage.
I'll just STFU now.

Well done skipper
No one gets alarmed or excited, all the punters feel comfortable with the skippers actions. Just the way it should be.

Getting out through the Quobba blowholes bar
Can be quite tricky when the swell is up and it's breaking right across the bay. You can end up past black rock picking your way out at times.

That passage is so
That passage is so temperamental. I've been caught out once myself, and i can say it was truly scary. General rule of thumb for me is 2-2.5m swell no go, especially with outgoing large tides.
Will be up there again in 3 weeks. See ya at the filleting table

Yep, I’ve propped the boat a few times through there many years ago. Not any more though, I’m a bit smarter these days.
