Sounder Shot

Hey all
Last weekend i had the boat down in Albany to do a bit of fishing and squiding. The weather was a bit overage so we stayed inside the sound for the couple of days.
We kept coming accross what i would call a bait balls on the sounder even found one that was hanging just off a lump for the 2 days we where fishing.
We tried dropping jigs, plastics and bait down around them but couldnt seem to get any sort of interest.
Am i reading the sounder correctly presuming these are bait balls and we where just unlucky that nothing was following any o them?

Looks like bait but always
Looks like bait but always worth a drop in my mind - where there's bait bigger fish are often nearby.
PS always interesting when you see bite shaped chunks out of bait schools (there are 2 across the top) - sometimes a sign of something coming in for a charge at them and they flee away before regrouping

Yeah that one i thought was
Yeah that one i thought was interesting that there was a smaller group off the side like something had swiped through. A few of the other schools we seen had some larger arches/echoes around them and i would have associated them with bigger fish. Likely sambos, kingies or salmon but couldnt get them to take anything so was starting to doubt the way i was reading it.

A good idea
Is to drop a sabiki rig down and try to catch whatever they are (Mulies, scalies, slimys, herring etc.) then chuck one of them down live

I love soundin up masses like
I love soundin up masses like that now. I have been dropping 10-20g micro jigs on them the last few outings in up to 30m depth and each time a school of something different, have caught slimies, hezzas (were eating the tiny whitebait that I sounded), schools of skippy on two occasions, bonito, so ya never know what it might be. Otherwise I have dropped an underwater camera down in the past, another way of tellin you what you are seein on the sounder. If you couldnt catch anything even on a sabiki jig, its probably small like tiny whitebait or something
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Cheers Guys. Will just keep trying around them in future. At least i know i am on the right track now.
I normally have a couple of sabiki rigs but i left them in the ute so couldnt try that.
