Discounts discontinued

Mon, 2018-11-12 01:16

The discounts have been discontinued, everyone pays the same price now.
All we need now is for death duties to be re- introduced and a yearly fee on skippers tickets along with a general fishing licence for beach fishers as well as those fishing from boats.
Then there is always a beach access tax for those that like to take a stroll along there local beach and of course an on the spot fine for smoker on the beach.

Well done wa gov.

Just renewed mine....still getting the "old fella's" discount- ooops - I mean the Seniors Discount.

This doesn't mean that I will necessarily be catching more than the younger blokes on here for paying less though- lol

Mon, 2018-11-12 06:26

It would have been better if everyone paid something, I dont understand why the crabs i catch from the yak are free yet the ones from the boat are worth $50 per year. If there was a state wide rec licence beach or boat the overall fees could be averaged out.

Most people who buy everything might only use some things once or twice every few years, some people who pay nothing fish most days of the year!

Yep

Mon, 2018-11-12 10:12

i changed my licences this year for the first time and only selected the rfbl licence option due to the expense for a family renewal.

i will eventually get the fresh water licences though as I want to try some trout fishing this year as we will be glamping down at Waroona over Xmas.

It’s interesting how our state has the most expensive licences. And not by a small margin either.

I know that we are physically a big state, but we do not have the number of fishers that they have over east to monitor, so the cost burden we are paying is disappointing.

It doesn’t seem to be buying us more ramps and facilities...

rant over...

 Is the size and low

Mon, 2018-11-12 12:22

Is the size and low population compared to the other states the reason? More land to cover, less people to pay for fishing licences.

The flip side

Mon, 2018-11-12 16:50

I guess the positive side of it is that people out fishing (and doing the right thing) are genuinely passionate and more likely to do the right thing in general. If you are paying for the privelege, you are more likely to respect the rules which in turn may help future generations who want to get out and enjoy what our fisheries have to offer.

Not supporting the ridiculous cost (which maybe also excludes people who want to have a go but can't afford it) - just trying to find a plus.

I do like the idea of a single, affordable licence system for most recreational fishing activities. I also think it would be good for beach/river fishing to be included....free for under 16s so our kids can participate.

To add to the interstate

Mon, 2018-11-12 18:39

To add to the interstate prices, you can also purchase a 3 day licence for around $7 in NSW and Vic.

I wonder how many of us take out a mate/relative decky who would happily pay the $7 but not keen on paying the full $40 for a single trip out?

I know I take out around 6-10 per year so that's potentially up to $70 in lost revenue from my boat.

As I understand it you can take friends fishing on your boat and they don't have to have a licence, but you can only catch the amount for each licence. So if you have 1 licenced fisher on board you can catch 1 licence limit, 2 2 limits, etc, but be aware Dhu limit of 2 per boat.
Please correct me if I am wrong!!

Expensive

Mon, 2018-11-12 19:55

Especially for a family.

However there is one feature of the laws that makes it a bit easier - for RFBL, at least, there only needs to be one licensed angler on board, although the bag limits apply to the number of licensed anglers.

 Could someone please specify

Fri, 2018-11-16 09:36

Could someone please specify what the $260 covers (itemised) for a South Aussie.

Some are currently pushing hard for a RFL here in SA at the moment but of course they wish to manage it.

Should add that SA has no RFL ATM but around $800,000 is collected from recreational cray pots and (very limited locations) rec net fees.

We also pay a boating levy ($60 a year from memory) attached to boat rego and the usual ramp fees

mostly ends up in general revenue

 SA - Southern Rock Lobster

Fri, 2018-11-16 14:47

SA - Southern Rock Lobster pot fees per year

$74 - one pot

$205 two pots  Max of two pots

4 cray per day or 8 per boat (must have 2 licence holders aboard)

(same if diving)

The few dams we can fish require a permit (think it is $30 per year) - not required at this stage to fish the Murray

Rec nets are only allowed in the Coorong, Lake Alexandrina, Lake Albert and Lake George - not sure of the associated fees

Yep its one big money grab.

Sat, 2018-11-17 12:52

Yep its one big money grab. So, to fish for Abalone its $50 for 4 hr season, Marron $50 for 4 week season.

Of all the licence money raised only 25% of it goes into RFIF funding. Recfish West has had a windfall as they take 15% of the licence revenue so for someone taking out all licences they get $39 which is more than a licence in most other states. I wouldnt mind knowing what Refish West are doing with all this extra money they are now getting.

I think some of it is going into the artificial reefs being deployed, which I do not have an issue with.

 Dont miss the licencing

Mon, 2018-11-19 19:05

Dont miss the licencing system of Wa.

Shifted over to Nth qld last year and the only paid licence here is for the stocked impoundments (barra dams, lakes etc) $10 a week or $50 a year (36 with discount) which allows you to fish 63 stocked fisheries. Cheap way to chase monster barra all year round as we have a closed saltwater season nov to feb.

A quick look on the fisheries website here shows a reasonably detailed spreadsheet of how much money has come in and where its been spent.

Now to go net a few prawns before ducking out in the tinny to shoot a cray or two with the speargun

Just got my freshwater

Wed, 2018-12-19 17:36

Just got my freshwater license for when I head down to the Blackwood this holiday season, $50... and i really only want to catch Redfin, which is a pest speices anyway. Why we need a license to catch a pest speices I will never know. If i catch some trout or cobbler, I would just throw them back.
