Is a High thrust motor a substitute for HP?
Submitted by SpotHound on Mon, 2018-12-17 20:59
I have noticed a trend at boat yards to put what I think are underpowered (HP wise) high thrust motors on boat packages to keep the cost down.
The answer from the salesman is always, it spins a bigger prop its all good.
Is there any truth to this logic?

In my opinion
It’s the age old saying, there’s no replacement for displacement. (Or at least turbo / blower boost and horsepower from Efi tuning etc). If a salesman is selling the idea that “yeah she’s all good, it’s got a bigger prop”, that to me sounds like bullshit.
We are starting to see bits and pieces of similar behaviour in the car world. That being Prado’s being fitted with a smaller 2.8 diesel engine and people doing 3.5 tonne towing gvm upgrades. Yes on paper this might all seem possible, but the reality is that the only person winning from all of these “upgrades” is the dealership and manufacturer, when they are needing to sell you a new engine and transmission from pushing the drivetrain so hard, for such a small cc motor, in such a large car.
Sorry went a little off track there, but in summary, I always believe you need the extra hp, in times of emergency. Whether that be for a car, boat, motorbike etc. And lastly these lower hp but larger prop boat options, must be taking ages to get on the plane? Therefore not really being the safest option when at sea and when the weather turns nasty?

Standard practice in a bmt
Standard practice in a bmt package to get the overall dollar figure down. The trailers are often a size small for the boat too.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Usual
Usual practice seems to be to sell them on a 2t trailer as the boat leave with no fuel water or other stuff and is usually just legal.
put anything in it and it goes overweight and needs a trailer upgrade

Resale is an issue. No one wants an underpowered boat. The 5k you save at purchase time may well end up costing you 6 months and 10k at resale.

True
I agree, you see many low hour packages for sale as it is cheaper to sell at a loss than to upgrade the mtoor.
