I wish

fisheries would do something about this crap.

We pay enough in licencing/skippers tickets/tax etc. to expect at least a little policing around the place.

Throw the book at them, ignorance is no excuse IMO

Thu, 2013-01-31 17:22

was at point walter the other night and saw a asian guy had 5 baby pinkies in his bucket. All the fish were dead but one of them so a mate picked it out of the bucket and threw it back in the water.

later that night another aisan man pulled in a tailor (clearly undersize) we watched him measure it and then put it in his bucket...couldnt believe it, walked over to him and told him we thought it was under so he showed us the fish and placed it on the mat trying to stretch it and make us believe it was 30cm long...........the fish measured 23cm and eventually he threw it back in

maybe its a case of safety in numbers. could just imagine what would happen if one or two officers were to approach a boat of say 4 or 5 or even a group on land and they decided to get nasty.

roving patrols

Sat, 2013-02-02 21:14

i have mentioned this before, we pay our fees to DoF and as a result they have obtained i believe 3 more mobil patrol units, yes i know they can't be ever were at once, but they could pay the most popular fishing locations a few visits and look in bags etc what gets taken at the mandurah cut is heart breaking. fish for the future means absolute nothing to some people and when you try to explain to them by putting the small stuff back means you will get bigger and better fish later on, the most heard responce is "i might be dead before that happens" it's not the young ones doing stupid things it's the old nasty locals who have this ingrained oppinion that because they are old (70-80) they don't have to comply with fishing laws sheeesh.

I'm thinking , if they just hand a few thousand tshirts out to concerned fishos , wouldn't cost much ...once established people will recognise these shirt wearers as fishos that will be sussing them out if they're doing the wrong thing ...just got to think of good logo / slogan

You might have a point

Sun, 2013-02-03 13:21

You might have a point ledge64. I would put my name down for this.

Maybe a system where we are able to make a sort of citizens arrest? Or have the rights to take their details and take photos of the evidence for later prosecution? Even just the later with some officail looking note pads would likely scare a few people into maybe doing the right thing the next time.

Oh and I'd want a badge too........

Mon, 2013-02-04 16:33

notorius, i do think that people make judgments based on what they see.

during the past weekend, i have been seeing the same groups of fishers most nights

I saw 4 groups of chinese and vietnamese people fishing along the nedlands foreshore just west of the perth flying squadron yacht club.

(there were three groups of vietnamese and one group of chinese) all we keeping undersize tailor and bream

some would hide the undersize ones in a covered bucket, others openly

there was one group of other ethnicity fishers, but only keeping a couple of size fish

 Taking undersize fish pisses

Tue, 2013-02-05 12:19

Taking undersize fish pisses me off, however racism isnt far behind in the piss off stakes. How do you know they were vietnamese/chinese? Did you ask them? Thats besides the point. Did you call fisheries on them? did you take their car rego?

Perhaps its a cultural issue, perhaps they legitimately dont know about size/catch restrictions. A simple chat with them in plain english would perhaps remedy the sittuation. Otherwise, report to fishwatch and let them do their thing.

Tue, 2013-02-05 15:58

notorius-i understand a little vietnamese and mandarin, as i have friends of both groups,  so yes, i know know what language they were speaking

yes, i did let some of them know some nights that fish traps are illegal, and about fish limits, but they normally dont want to listen...but it was obvious that they are hiding fish and dont want to know

some even told me they had a license for the traps, and i explained its not possible, then they just smile, then turn their backs and ignore me.....

i haven contacted fisheries at various times, but they normally arent able to come

i've seen various people who walk there let people know the rules, but they dont want to know....

Bros mate

Tue, 2013-02-05 17:01

Brothers mate was at Lancelin over the Aussie day break n went down to look at what's being caught.  Was a couple off guys there with buckets full off undersized pinkies. He walked up kicked the bucket in the water then pushed the guy in the water. Great job I think

Probably not the best idea to push someone in the drink as A: it could be classed as assault, or B: more importantly he/she might not be able to swim and now you have a drowning victem to deal with.

Throwing all the undersized fish back in though, see no problems with that. But leave them their buckets as you could get a fine for littereing turfing them in the water too.

well, a thumbs up to fisheries !!

they came down the the swan river foreshore along nedlands a couple of times and checked out quite a few people, so hopefully the message about bag limits and undersize fish has gotten around to some of the worst offenders !

one of my neighbours was around there for a walk and even saw the fisheries in action !!

forign fishers

Mon, 2013-02-11 21:01

notorious,  i think you need to have a good look around you , you are looking with both eyes shut and who care where they come from  just dont fish illeagle.

crabbing is a good one to look at as well , a few friends and my self crabbing down near mandurah

watching a line of 18 asians (yes we counted them)with scoop nets taking everthing they could get in their floating tubs

when approched was told would you like your throat cut auzzzzzie

that started a little farcus hay, they lost their load of crabs.

i have never seen a auzzie take under size

but i have caught a few asians doing the wrong thing far too often

two weeks ago i got my prop caught in a net up near ashfield, and yes asians AGAIN.!!

should have seen the tossers faces as i cut their net into a whole heap of pieces and i took it out to a bin,

wake up mate and take a good look at whats happening to OUR fish

and no im not racist before you ask

but im pissed off with the way some dont follow rules

I think the word your looking for is " aussie " or " ozzy " either way i have seen plenty of "auzzies" do the wrong thing and take undrsize fish or exceed bag limits.

Greed is not just restricted to race.

Nice troll mate . Its ok to have an oppinion but your comment just plain sucks, and offends me as an Australian . Yeah i agree , you are not a racist just plain ignorant.

Seems to be a lot of pissed

Fri, 2013-02-15 21:09

Seems to be a lot of pissed off people complaining about Hillarys and Mindarie lately.....
Go the neighbourhood watch method.
Get a group of people together, set up a roster, take it in turns to head down with a camera and a pen for a few hours each night.
Wont take long for the message to get through.

Complaining on a forum does SFA.... get active if ya don't like it!

So true!

I find it a bit hard to believe people complain here yet they are too lazy to simply call fishwatch at the time.

Program it into your phone and use it.

Fisheries will get them

Sat, 2013-02-16 12:30

Fisheries will get them eventually if you help. I have friends who in the past that had issues with certain groups coming to claremont jetty and taking undersize fish and crabs

They contacted fisheries each time it happened, told them what days and times they generally were there....they even took down car rego's and photos in some cases

Eventually fisheries was free at the right day/time and they got busted.

subaquatic is right, make sure you also take action, dont just complain here....
