As a hunter and Fisher I have been putting up with this crap for years. People with no idea making decisions about our resources. Vote wisely. It's our only way to get change.
Just support a candidate that will support us and not the green tree hugging protect and save everything groups. There are a couple who share a passion for hunter gatherers lifestyle. Do your due diligence and make an informed decision is the point I am trying to make . If we don't try to do something we wont have a lifestyle much longer. You should try being a firearms owner in W.A. jeeezzzzuuusss
Most sharks (and especially the ones eating our fish off the hook) are not fully protected anyway? So there is nothing to stop you knocking a few off as it is?
This poster is just a green group stirring up shit trying to head off any possible official loosening of rules before they can get traction.
Which is never going to happen anyway no matter which political party is in control.
Looks to me that many of the above comments are confusing great whites and all the other species that eat our fish (bronzies, black tips, sandbar etc)
Some bloke on Instagram posted about this and I gave him serve about the fact that demersal fish are being decimated, isn't that an environmental problem in itself?
Wapol has banned a number of guns including an air rifle ffs on appearance only, nothing to do with the action of the firearm
The National shooting Council in Victoria successfully challenged them and had some wins. NSC is 2 blokes with access to a passionate lawyer who have made a huge difference via legal challenges. They were solely responsible for the reopening of gun shops during covid lockdowns which were held to be unlawful and flowed to all states once one state banned them. The similar attacks on our fishing rights can only be stopped by a similar strategy. Legal action. We can beat our chests all we want in these forms but if we don't get of our ass and actually try to fight back we will not have an industry left much longer.
I saw a news article where these greenies were complaining that the proposal for allowing more professional Shark fisherman was just a ruse for a Shark cull.
If I had of been there, I would have called this bloke Einstein.......that is exactly what it is, we are not trying to hide that......its well overdue.
Unfortunately these people don't actually experience the real world. They seem to think there are a couple of innocent Sharks swimming around minding their own business, not harming anyone, that they believe are actually endangered.
I'd like to take one out in my boat from Steep Point or Exmouth to show them what its really like. If they are lucky, I might even bring them back :-)
Its almost amusing that serial pest leon dechump is behind this campaign as well. The same guy who made all the noise to shark bay shire about the 1 ton a day in the filleting bins, there was never any proof of 1 ton of frames a day but he pissed in the pockets of the shark bay council and pushed his agenda hard with the 10kg fillet limit that looks like its gained traction.
He consistently has some sort of social media campaign running about these issues and has been squawking about this for a few years now about them.
Jump on any of the Shark Bay facebook pages to see this goose in full flight
He's also on all of the FB fishing pages throwing out red herring comments to make it look like he's a keen fisho all the while gathering intel to push his agenda.
Had quite a few arguments with Leon about his proposed shark sanctuary and his interest in it could be because he does hire of paddle boartd etc and advertises that sharks are one of the many things you can see while paddling around.
The area north of Steep Point to North West Cape has been a no shark fishing zone for over 40 years, so I don't know why he is jumping up and down, could be he wants it permanent
Yep. Applying the same flawed argument to fish stock resource management. The fish loses are not sustainable. My concern is that now hunting is effectively banned in WA it's now fishos in the firing line. Feral cats and foxs account, by a conservative study sanctioned by the federal government, around 25 Billion, with a B, Billion native animals annually. Doesn't even take into account wild dogs pigs goats ect but we cant assist in the humane destruction of these pests if you don't know someone with a property. I don't know how to get through to these people that their logic is fundamentally flawed
something to think about in the up coming election imo
mcgowan will romp it in and win handsomely , which will give him a big mandate to push through with his agenda items and pay back some political debts to those who have supported them or helped them and put some of their key faith items forward
my guess is we will see conversations and movement to
1 appease green support , and they have some bad ideas /policies
2 state marine park changes /increases including more sanctuary zones etc etc , national park access and fees etc
3 continuation of the cockburn port shipping terminal building , likly brought forward again
4 more stripping away of shooting access and tighter legislation for owners /buyers etc etc
5 more stripping away of fishing access , seasons , possesion limits, stronger legal changes on how we handle our catch for example to suit green groups
6 they may well also revisit the cray industry situation alla dave kelly 2019 version
given there will be pretty much no opposition in the big house , anything he wishes will likly go through
food for thought as he will likely win this election and the one after unless he does something really bad to fall ........thats another 6-7 years of their agenda with min opponents to block or modify it ......... id expect us recs to be under scrutiny for these other groups to push changes
I know for a fact from someone who works for a minister they are trying to weaken the green's leverage. , to succinctly put in the greens are a pain in the arse to them.
I don't think he'll have a leg to stand on in regards to green issues. Wiping out class A nature reserves and marine parks so his mates can build houses on the labd has taken care of that.
they have along standing relationship he and the party room wont be willing to just throw under the bus and dump them or their ideas as they are often aligned
the point is be very wary of how his gov win will impact the future and his ability to make changes at will
Its sad so many people with there big opinions that have no idea were the issue is, commenting on the shark population world wide.
I'm not affected as I haven't boated that far North as yet but have been reading about the issue many face for a lot of years and don't question the loss of good quality fish.
Would be good to know a bit more about the previous shark fishing, there licenses, no off and the area they worked etc.....what year did it stop.
Shark fished out of Hedland up until 2002, got out about 3 months before it was shut down. Our licence ran from NW cape. 114E to 120E, about half way from Hedland to Broome, and as far north as we wanted to go. We reported that the numbers were dropping and fisheries told us that it was okay and that the numbers would rise again [crap]. Sadly we got ripped off and had to give up and sail the boat back to Fremantle and sell up. the fishery was closed a short time later and still remains closed now, some 18 years later.
All the meat we took was boneless, brined and plastic wrapped and frozen for export to Asia, big tigers, hammers, pig eye whalers, duskies, thickskins etc, what they did with it we didn't care but we had to show we had a viable market for the meat to be able to fish, the money for the fins was the deciding factor.
After that I skippered a shark net boat down around the Busso to Augusta region for a couple of years till the body said enough is enough, eating painkillers to keep driving a boat that was too small for what we were doing, and called it quits
Recfishwest put forward recommendations as a package. If opening up shark fishing gets taken out then the whole lot of recommendations should be scrapped...
Maybe real fishos should start up a lobby group like this Leon guy...
If that is the case, then it is because most “real fishos” can’t be bothered to put their hand up with the effort to fight for what they want.
And that won’t change whether it’s RFW or this new group suggested.
But some “real fishos” have and do make the effort, and have made a real difference to your fishing experience.
But the vast majority of fishos don’t know or appreciate this because those people just get on with it working the system that’s in place already. A few people can only do so much though, where are the rest who will actually stand up and make the effort?
most rec fishos are quick to have a grizzle when they dont like something thats about to impact them ... but very few ever actually contibute over the long run to help manage their pastime or even understand how any lobbing or change is achieved ..
plenty actually unknowingly work against themselves and their own management rules ,,, brag videos showing poor fish handling practices ,hands in gills , dropping dhuis onto dry boat carpet then releasing ,holding them for ages to take pics etc before release ... burleying sharks , dumping fish caracsses , or overfilling public ramp bins , smashing dead blowies on jettys , rubbish and shite left behind on beaches after camping or other type of posts help ''others '' to use us to prove their ideas into management changes most dont like or want
wins are quickly forgotten,, even though there hard to get and take lots of man hours etc
its far easier to just grizzle away on social media
I know of one that I've met, who has played the "long game" with the management committees, has overseen many changes for the better that have improved almost every rec fishers experience in a noticeable way and prefers a lower profile.
It is somewhat telling that people demand to know how the negative impacts came to be in place but noone asks how the positive changes came to be enacted.
This comment is intended as a generalisation of fishers ambivalence rather than anyone in particular, before it is taken personally by anyone
I wish I had the time and brains to do more than winge on social media! between work and bringing up a small family, I dont see how I could make a difference with the pittance of spare time im graced. Maybe thats a lazy copout but thats how i feel

You mean the demersal fish....
...that are being decimated because people are hooking them and making them easy targets for sharks?
Fisheries will implement no-go zones, locking fishers out of sharky areas before they approve of any shark cull.

Gun bans
Wapol has banned a number of guns including an air rifle ffs on appearance only, nothing to do with the action of the firearm
The National shooting Council in Victoria successfully challenged them and had some wins. NSC is 2 blokes with access to a passionate lawyer who have made a huge difference via legal challenges.
