SFP proposes raising of Dhufish bag limit

Just saw this press release on the SFP's facebook page.

In a nutshell they are proposing one dhufish per angler on recreational boats where each angler holds a valid rfbl.

Yeah just saw this today on the new guide. There's some good out comes at the moment. And I reckon 1 Dhuie per fisho per boat is a good idea and policy to adapt. You're not always guaranteed of bagging on them anyway and at least all on board has a chance to take one home.

Its not a 'promise', its a proposal to lobby whatever govt is elected.

Lots of issues to consider when one votes, but personally the most prominent ones for me are those that impact my fishing, 4wd, camping and hunting opportunities.

Lobbying

Mon, 2013-01-28 18:20

Lobbying is good, but you need shit loads of dollars and zealots behind you Rob i.e. PEW.

Recfishwest will unfortunately never have that level of influence, unless its memberships hits the hundreds of thousands.

The perfect storm is to get a candidate or two that holds the balance of power in a minority government. This is whats happening federally at the moment with the greens and labor, hence all these marine parks AND at the state level in NSW with the SFP.

Mon, 2013-01-28 20:07

Isn't some one or two knobs with the balance of power of power that caused all this shit?

Everyone loves to dump on labor and the greens, but riddle me this? Why didn't the libs, which had a much bigger block than the greens, ever vote with labor?

If they did, we would currently be getting liberal appeasement politics, not green appeasement politics, but then there would be less for the c-c-cry-more bunch to relentlessly bleat over.

As for Labour and Liberal joining forces, that would be like me suddenly becoming West Coast Eagles no 1 fan, it would never ever happen.

Mon, 2013-01-28 20:33

Spin is what caused my total dissatisfaction with both sides, I don't pay it, whoever it comes from.

It's that polar crap that means no one gets good representation in Australia. It is normal for minority governments to form in Europe and there it means they get representative negotiated solutions. Instead here we get people that represent 40% of the population destroying the dreams of 39%, with the help of 2% to get them past the post.

If Australia keeps going the way it is, fishing, 4wding and hunting will be illegal activities in 50+ years. We'll all be reminiscing on the internet (via the NBN) how things used to be and why didn't we do more to stop it happening.

Mon, 2013-01-28 20:12

I think the current 2 dhu per boat limit is sensible, and don't agree with an increase at this stage as I don't think dhu stocks have recovered enough. Yep, I fish, yep, I take dhuies, but I would like my kids to be able to as well. When it gets easy to get 2 dhuies per boat for the average punter, then agree the limit could go up.

So what's your source of information that gives you the idea that stocks haven't recovered enough? We pulled in about 10 On Sat and actually released 4 or 5 that were just size and the rest were under. That in my opinion means the stocks are reasonably healthy if that's the outcome of one boats day out. Maybe it's just your opinion.....

What doesnt gel with me is why metro (1 million plus people over 150km) has the same bag limits as (say) midwest (200,000 over 600km). Get rid of the boat limit at least outside metro.

Thing is Boomer is that if you can take one more Dhuie then that's one less Baldie, Pinky etc so the pressure is off those fish a bit more.  The way the current bag limits are with three of us on board we can take 6 Pinkies, Baldies etc. Seems a bit out of balance to me.

Its not the 2 per day that affects me, its the boat limit and how its enforced. A 3 day Abrolhos trip results in quite a few thrown back, in an area where there are few day trippers.

 I think you misunderstand me

Tue, 2013-01-29 06:44

I think you misunderstand me Boomer. I didnt say 2 fish wasnt enough, i disagree with the boat limit.

If i come out here with 3 of my kids or mates for 3 days, thats can be alot of fish "disturbed" unnecessarily.

For the record though im not fussed if they are dhus baldies pinkies or trout in my bag, just make dhus same as trout which fits in with "simplifying" bag limits also.

When you say nuculas are you saying that fish stocks here (abrolhos) spread to metro? As i havent heard that before and its not my understanding.

this is a discussion also mate, why if people disagree with your view, are they "whinging"?

no way. you add one more dhui which means 5 or 6 ppl on a boat can get one each times that by how many boats are in the metro area! you all had your way with running wetliners out of the metro area now itll be a free for all to clean out the dhuis! dont get me wrong i catch n dispatch a dhui every now and then but two per boat is enough! so called iconic fish should be protected no encouragement to take more of them!

There's no guarantee of catching three fish, and hey if you do and you don't want more than two - guess what?-  put the third back. You re also right about not fishing more than 3 max 4 people even in a bigger boat - its too cramped for fishos who are used to and enjoy moving around the deck to get to equipment etc.

Charter boats

Tue, 2013-01-29 10:57

I have no issue with the cuurent limit of 2 per boat. PLenty of fillets to go around

My main concern with 1 per person is what the charter boats can take. In the past have seen photos ofcharter boats with 30plus Dhufish on board. If they have say 20  passengers and find a good spot they will take all from the one spot. From memory their limit is 6.

Which is my concern for towns like jurien bay for example, seasport has been doing a great job there for ages, but if more and more charter boats start up and are taking their boat limit in places like this for a good portion of the year it will take its toll.

Increase bag limit, but introduce a slot limit?  Maybe keep a couple of the medium size fish, and let those big mothers go (properly released!)

Are the biggest fish the best breeders?

1 per rfbl

Tue, 2013-01-29 15:33

Is more than fair IMO, with up to say 4 anglers per recreational boat.

One side benefit of this is that it may reduce the incidences of 'upgrading' which does happen unfortunately.

As for charter boats, IMO 6-8 per vessel would be fair.

I made the comment about a month ago when the simple new fishing regs came out that there should be 1 Dhu per licence holder and got bagged for it but good to see the Shooters and Fishers are using it as a policy in the up coming election. From what I understand the Dhufish stocks are being assessed by fisheries at the moment and until that concludes it's a bit difficult to know whether it would be sustainable or not but from what I'm seeing the Dhufish numbers have certainly improved.

Ive been watching this post

Tue, 2013-02-12 21:07

Ive been watching this post for a while now with great interest and glad to see such differing opinions.

I feel like most fisho's that these WA icons need to be protected. What I do want to see is the boat limits assessed and if it is found that increasing the boat limits will have no affect I would like to see changes made. Are we just seeing more boats on the water because of the restrictions? People have always found ways around restrictions. To me catching a dhufish isn't just about taking a fillet home, It is more about bringing a fish home to the wife and kids and showing your catch with pride.

Some people may say"2 per boat is plenty" but what about the bloke that only manages to get out once every now and again as the opportunity doesnt arise often Not every one can afford to go out once or twice a week and if you are one of these people who happens to be the "3rd" wheel and has paid a license, wouldnt you feel robbed?

I put my hand up for this because I am truly concerned about the future of outdoor activities. I would rather be out fishing, spearfishing or hunting but over the last few years I like many have seen too many recreations attacked by the ideology of the greens and they're ilk. The new marine parks are a perfect example of what can happen if ideology gets in the way of science and to my knowledge I havent seen too many politicians raise they're hand to oppose it either. WE need someone in to bat for us!

You are always going to get differing views within a group and thats a good thing as it throws ideas around so that the best possible solution can be found.
