I used to use salt water
I used to use salt water flake ice and it's well worth the hunting down. I can tell you where to get in in South Oz but can't help you with WA!

I made my own once. I layered ice,beer,salt,ice,beer,salt.Within about one hour most of the piss was frozen and all of the ice was melted.Not quite what I wanted.I used pool salt instead of rock salt thinking salt is salt.Apparently the ratio has to be right or it all goes to shit.

I haven't seen it here, but in other countries, you could buy it in the fishing boat harbors, along side. Just pull up in your boat and pull the chute over and dispense the ice straight into you icebox.

Anyone deal with the sale of wet fish. What kind of ice do they put around the fish on display in shops? Might have to give Kailis a call.

when i worked at selanes
when i worked at selanes they had a ice machine that used to make flake ice, was always good when i filled the killtank on a sat morning before going fishing, i would assume kailis would have the same system, not to sure whether either sell that kind of ice direct to the public though

For those that may have been interested I have been unable to locate any suppliers of salt ice in Perth metro or anywhere else in WA for that matter. Why was I looking? Prices are generally dearer in NZ compared to here but you can buy a 120 litre container of salt ice in Auckland for NZ$10.

I make my own Jamsey. I use a
I make my own Jamsey. I use a small funnel to pour salt into a party balloon and I then fill the balloon with warm water and give it a bit of a shake to dissolve the salt and chuck the balloons in the freezer.
The balloons will feel like the salt water hasn't frozen but as soon as you pierce it and it mixes with air and freezes right up.

Need pressure to get the water in the balloon. Only way I could use sea water would be to fill up balloons with my deckwash while the boat's in the water then store them in a bucket till I got home. Doing it at home with cooking salt seems much easier.

Cheers mate, been doing it that way for a while and it works really well especially for getting beer icy cold as well. I use 1/4 cup (70g) per balloon which pretty much fills it with salt and then fill it up to around 2L.

The ratio of salt to water you are using (35g salt : 1 litre water) is consistent with the salinity of sea water. Flake salt ice uses a lot less salt. The info I have indicates they use 500g salt to 1000 litres of water when making flake salt ice.
I have some rectangular plastic laundry containers which I use to make ice. These are approx 10 litre capacity and as they are around 130mm high they fit into the freezer nicely. Place in freezer for a couple of days, remove ice from plastic mould and repeat. I haven't been adding salt but will look at this in the future.

There is more salt than that added, did you get your info from the company’s in NZ producing Sat Ice?
The Salty Fisherman who produces it in Perth has a higher Salt Content than what is produced in NZ.

I recently exchanged a few emails with The Salty Fisherman asking about the availability of free flow salt ice - turn up with an esky and they will fill it. The demand is not there yet apparently as West Australian fishos have yet to embrace the idea. In NZ you turn up with an esky and this costs you 15 cents a litre. Sounds great to me and I can only hope the concept catches on here.

It's all about geometry and
It's all about geometry and physics Boon which I sucked at on both accounts in school but I do believe a sphere has a smaller surface area than a cylinder per volume so it will take longer to melt. The main reason though is that they are easier to store in the freezer than buckets as the balloon deforms in shape if you have to squeeze it in and when I head out I don't have a bunch of buckets in the boat getting in my way once I use the ice.

MY RECIPE salty ice
3 or 4 ,2 ltr old milk cont with salted water 1 inch from the top full in freezer on Monday ready for Sat/sun .Smash it with a rubber mallet for crushed ice and cut out or leave whole using 1 ltr containers to reuse for next trip.Cover with sea water when you get out on the water.Elevate cans and other stuff on a old refrigerator rack with pvc pipe as legs in Esky.
