Rod Recommendations for Jigging
Submitted by stickface on Tue, 2018-03-27 12:44
Hi All,
I'm keen to have a serious crack at jigging for demersals, I mainly fish 40 metres to 90 metres depth.
Have picked up a few good fish on jigs, but now want to set up a dedicated outfit for jigging.
What is everyone using ?
I would probably use the Stella 6000 that I already own, and want to match a good rod to it.
What do you recommend ? Are there better choices than the 6000 Stella ?
Any info appreciated.
Cheers

type j
Mate has a pe1.5-4 shimano type j matched to a stella 6000 and it's a great setup - he uses it as an all rounder but it's most suited to jigging and he's knocked over some big fish on it. The type j's need no introduction as a quality jigging rod.
I ran a daiwa blast and 3500 hd certate/500 twinpower which is a ittle more basic for a couple of years but have since gone to an overhead setup with a ocea jigger reel and jignesis rod - which suits me fine.

I'm now using an 1500 HG Ocea Jigger and Gomoku, my son nailed a good Dhu on it when he 'borrowed' it the other week. Handled it no probs

smaller and lighter the
smaller and lighter the better :)
Down south we used to use pe1 with 6'3 noodles with 3500 size daiwa reels (4000 size shimano I guess). 40-80g slow pitch jigs etc..
Have a look at evergreen or chat to the lads at tackle hq they should have some quality rods

I use a Demonblood CJ64 with a 4000 Stradic and I love that combo - didnt really break the bank but also gives me a little bit of flexibility for casting and trolling etc.

Second the Saltiga-X
I have the Saltiga-X in 3 sizes matched to Saltiga 30LD, Saltiga 4500h and Saltiga 6500h ( they are 2015 series). Cant speak highly enough of the rods, and you can get them 20% off at sales sometimes which makes them good value as they retail for about $449. The weight of the PE 5-6 one still blows my mind how it can handle such big line and fish.
Cheers,
Disco.

Quality braid for me seems to make the difference
Got to say love the look of the shimano type j though.

Thanks for all the replies,
Thanks for all the replies, have spoken to a few people and also had a good look around in tackle shops. I've pretty much decided to go with a ShimanoType J PE4, should match up nicely with the 6000 Stella.
Again, thanks to you all for your input.

Don't buy too soon.
Stevo 81 and Feral have got it right.
For Metro/Southern demersals a bit lighter is better, PE2.5 max is about right.
A PE4 rod will need lures around 200gr to work properly.
My Demonblood CJ64/5000 shimano is now my back-up, as it requires jigs a bit heavy to work all day,and doesn't pick up as many fish on the drop.
I mostly fish PE2.5 on a cheaper overhead jig rod, with a narrow spool overhead (Metalloid 5NS bought when they were cheap). Can jig all day with this outfit, and pick up 30% of my fish on the drop, which I can feel through the overhead much better than with the threadline outfit.
