Rod and reel advise for the minister of finance

Hi guys. So after our recent trip to coral bay and rebooking again for next year it's been decided that I will be buying a rod and reel combo for the boss.  Unsure of where to start though. Here's the details. This year she used a monster mesh and a dais a dreams. It went well (wasn't too happy with the way the reel sounded). She said at some times she seemed to struggle. I then gave her a pfluger 6000 size reel on a 7/6 strudwick. She seemed to like that but seeing my old lady fishing with an old school pen overhead with level wind she said what about something like that. So what do you fellas have your partners geared up with. Overhead or spinning. Happy to spend decent coin to get something decent and something that if I need to use it I can.. She is not the strongest of females so I was thinking a rod with a bit of size to it for leverage but still unsure.. Any advise will be great

cheers Rossco

I'm thinking something like a Saragosa 8000 on a tcurve deep jig 200. Nice and light and handle anything.

Are you talking mainly bottom fishing from a boat?

or casting from shore?

the longer the rod the harder it will be on her when she hooks up. If she's only small and If boat fishing look at 5'6 - 6' rod with something like a stradic 6000FJ 30lb line.

Ahh yeah sorry forgot that fact. Yes bottom bashing. Ok I would have thought a longer rod would be easier with leverage but was unsure hence why I came you fish wrecked for the answers. Yep she is only small and yea as I said not really strong. She gives it a good go but yeah got to help her out sometimes which is fine.. I did have thoughts of the stradic but yeah. The gosa on a t curve would be a good combo. Reel size would say an 8000 give her more power over say a 6000..

The suggestion above with the T curve is a good one. I would lean towards the 10000 SW Saragosa instead of the 8000 though as it has a lower gear ratio so will easier to use. Combined with the short T curve 200 and it will be a pretty sweet rig. Go with decent 50lb braid.

Just try going with what she can handle. Usually a smaller reel will be more comfortable for fishing for longer and the Stradic has the same drag rating as the Saragosa. (probably more than she can handle anyway).

A bigger reel is not necessarily going to give her more power if she doesn't have the strength to use it.

the saragosa's are a good bluewater reel ....for bottom bashing only go the 10000 NOT the 8000. Both the same size body but the 10000 is a lower geared reel and will make all the difference. (the 8000 is high speed and harder on the retrieve when bottom bashing)

EDIT :lol looks like bunny beat me too it

I've just paired up an 8000 Stradic with a Monster Mesh 3-4 PE, haven't caught anything yet as I was livebaiting around Ascot/Bayswater but it sure does feel sweet to use

the overall weight of the combo is important. the stradic is lighter compared to the saragosa, so she might be able to fish a bit longer with the stradic...

If you're happy to spend a bit of coin then go for a catalina 4000. Light as a feather and will crank just about anything into the boat. I recently got a Eupro jigman to team mine up with and it's now my favourite combo.

A few years ago I bought a Fin Nor offshore spin 561 tl jig that is used with a big spheros and 50 pound braid.

My missus has claimed it as hers and she loves it.It is 1.5m long which is about 200mm shorter than my ugly sticks and about half the weight. It looks flimsy as it is really skinny and has big guides.IIt spends a month in coral bay each year so as you can imagine it has been connected to heaps of sharks and big fish. She likes the lightness and the length as it has less leverage on her when fighting sharks.

I paid $85 for it on special.

For me usually a rod is a rod but this is different and by the way I have had dealings with 2 fin nor eggbeaters and they are both shit.

I have got 3 spheros and no problems with them.

50 pound braid is heaps as it is near on impossible to break it when snagged and 80 pound often requires a bigger sinker to hold bottom.
