Repowering Runabout

 Hi all,

Looking at repowering my boat and just after a bit of advice. I currently have a 2002 40hp Mercury on the back but would love a bit more power when kneeboarding and biscuiting. The plate on the hull says it can take up to a 70hp but I can not afford a brand new one. Becuase of this I have been looking at second hand ones. So my questions are:

1) Where would be the best place to pick up a second hand outboard and trade in my 40hp one with installation

2) Seeing as I already have all the mercury dials setup in the dash would I be better getting another Mercury and just swapping motor? Only issue with this is that Mercury only make a 75hp which is why I've been looking at yamaha and suzuki who make a 70hp. Would putting a 75hp void my insurance or cause any other problems?

Thanks

Size of hull

What size boat is it?  Seen a lot of boats and there is no way I would ever go anywhere near the maximum horsepower some of the plates recommended.

Savage Safari 450

It's a Savage Safari 450. Max speed with just me in the boat at the moment is about 38kmph. Struggles to get past low revs and plain with more then 2 people. Maybe I'd be better going for a 60hp? Just didn't want to go half ass and in 6 months regretting not getting a 70hp.

Also when we are kneeboarding or doing other water sports down on the river I have to have the motor at 100% so thought if I put 70hp on it would be nice to only have to sit at say 60% and save some fuel. Wouldn't nessersarily have it at 100%.

Would you want to sell it

Would you want to sell it outright or do a swap with my outboard and some cash?
