Submitted by mightymouse on Thu, 2011-11-24 17:39
Hi everyone,
Looking for some advice on what's a better tow vehicle .
4.2 D year 1990's or 350 chev in a swb
Both motor's are in patrol's what motor would have more torque for towing ?
Thanks for any input.

Depends on what you are towing.
Two different cars that's for sure. Are you concerned about the vehicle or just towing capacity? Personally, I would stick with turbo diesel for economy and torque but hey, I am no expert and it's the quality of the vehicle I would be more interested in. Bear in mind that the vehicle you have specified is over 20 years old so she will be tired, that's for sure. Any comments you get here about towing capacity may well be from the manuals of vehicles sold as new.

I would say its just a D not a TD Vince.
I dont want to make a call on the motors. We have towed boats to exxie with both. The 4.2 diesel struggled a bit on the hills and the 350 was thirsty. My call would be a swb isnt the best for towing.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Agree with TomCat - non turbo
Agree with TomCat - non turbo diesels are slugs.
But you're going to be wanting a BIG tank in the 350 Chev Patrol - maybe not so bad if you're not doing bulk kms.

Torque in Patrol
If you're not worried about the petrol bill, the 350 chev will give you somewhere around 460-480 nm of Torque, and the standard 4.2 diesel would get you about 260. So the chev would be the answer I reckon

Towing
What size boat are you looking to tow? If it is around 1 tonne then the 4.2D will be fine. If it is up around 2 tonne, then the patrol will struggle.
Chuck a turbo on it then you have no problems
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

good thing about the chevs
good thing about the chevs new or old is you can change the cam to somethin more torquier or even whack a blower or turbo onto it for serious power, popular conversion on landies and patrols.
