parents visiting
Submitted by otoshi on Wed, 2008-09-24 11:32
Hello all, badly in need of some pointers from anyone who have been fishing (land base)
south of perth for the past few days. As my parents will be visiting from Singapore for the weekend (26th 27th Sept), i was
thinking of showing them my new found hobby(fishing). but did not want to end the day empty
handed like i normally do. any advice on *location, bait ( squid, prawns and sand worm are what i am using), rigs, time would be most welcome.
thank you

How mobile are they Otoshi?
You could take them down to the Eshed jetty in Fremantle (next to the Eshed markets). Easy fishing with light lines and small hooks with the occasional decent fish coming aboard. They can even catch you some fresh bait for your next fishing outing.

hello Kasey, this is going to sound silly but would u tell me what do u mean by time it with the tides? like should i be fishing on a incoming tide or a out going one?

The water in front of E-shed
The water in front of E-shed is at a point in the river where the current is very strong. Either incoming or outcoming will not be as good as the hour before until about an hour after a tide change.
It is during this 'slack water' when fish will come out and more readily look for food.
Bring a bit of burley, throw a handful in and if it doesn't get carried 5-10m away with the rushing tide, you are at about the right time.
Usually it becomes very easy after that as the yellowtail and herring cloud around your berley and you can fill a bucket in a very short time.
There is no size limits on these, but be aware that it is 25cm for skippy. Bag limits still apply.

Rig doesn't sound too bad Otoshi
As Kasey said, try and match your timing with tide turns.
Also take a larger set-up if you have one and throw out a mulie or squid. You never know what will turn up there.

Bah, the only things you
Bah, the only things you catch at e-shed are; livey - shag, deady - ray. Those shags have not the slightest bit of problem getting down to 12m to pick up my live gars held to the bottom with a sinker.

On whole dead garfish you
On whole dead garfish you tend to catch stingrays.
On whole live garfish a very pesky bird called a shag, or cormorant, eats your bait, it can dive to 12m as well.

Mate, why don;t you pop down and see Honshu and Ryan at

If I was you I would try and get something versatile that will allow you enough grunt to fish off some of the groynes and other rock walls.

that would be good. my first herring with my parents (if there is any about and willing to play). anyone knows if they are around?

You might need a heavier lead if you are going to fish
from the rocks Otoshis. I use 20lb minimum just to give me a bit of extra protection from the rocks themselves.
That fish could have been anything. All types of fishies cruise around there.
North Mole, near the canteen shop, might be worth a go for herring, skippy and tailor.

Herring are usually pretty
Herring are usually pretty easy to catch, as long as you burley burley burley :p. I like 5g silver twisties, but various stuff works (bait, SPs, etc). Should be some squid around where Colin was mentioning if you go at the right time. Bit better catching some fish/squid you can eat than yellowtail or something :p I'm sure you're parents would be impressed if you both caught and cooked dinner :D
I like Pt Peron as well. Last time you could see the herring and squid straight down around the burley from the place I was fishing. Bit further to go though.
And as said before, the guys are Oceanside (or one of other sponsors like Tackle Shack) should be able to help you out.

Haha, not a secret spot by any means :p. And yep, the one in rockingham. Pretty much lots of areas around the rocks at the tip. Can get a bit busy on weekdays and make sure you dont leave any valuables in the car.

Incoming Tides
I know that down here in Mandurah I have virtually all of my success in both the estuary and the Dawesville Cut when the tide is coming in. Maybe E-Shed is different, and it is certainly easier to fish when the water slows down, but I find that the clean water coming in from the ocean seems to really bring them on. By "them" I mean herring, skippy, tailor, and salmon trout.
I also haven't used bait in these places for about three years...try the Berkeley Gulp sandworms in any colour with as light as a jighead as your gear can handle. By light I mean 1/4 ounce (7 grams) or less, with a flourocarbon leader no more than 8-10 lbs....a 4 kg spinning outfit or lighter is the way to go.
One more tip regarding fast moving water...fish tend to hold up under structure in a strong current, and wait for the food to come to them, so whether you're using bait or soft plastics, it's best to cast upstream and allow your offering to drift back towards, or along, the jetty/bridge pylons.

hi guys, just a quick
hi guys, just a quick update. started fishing with only dad today at about 8am from palmy jetty( 1 garfish) after 1.5hrs, when to the sailing club jetty (empty). had a quick lunch at rockingham, went to woodman point (empty). then at 3+pm arrived at south mole(again empty)...
so i guess its a pretty bad day to show off perth shore fishing.
ended up with only 1 gar which was fed to the birds at south mole. LOL. anyway if possible, will try again tomolo afternoon at south mole.
btw, rig was burley cage on main 4lb then size 10 long shank on 0.5-0.7M of 2lb lead for both rods. bait was cut up prawns.

Sandropers Guide to Fishing in WA
This is an "idiot proof" little book that costs fark all and is a great starter for novices. By it from the counter at the tackle shop. It discusses WA species and shows you how to set rigs for them. With the gear you have now you should be able to experiment in many locations. Just get the book, buy some basic gear and get out there!!!!!!
Cheers, Vince
