whiting

Tue, 2017-11-28 10:00

I have caught the golden lined whiting at Quobba and Exmouth so any beach adjacent to coral should hold some.I dig the beach worms that are under weed and thread them on a very fine long shank red hook in 8-10 size use good quality it will make a big difference in catch rate and these are not yellowfin and grow as big as your arm so be prepared to hang on.I have sight cast to them before and with the right wind and gear have used just a hook with a clump of worms. They will knock each other over to get to the bait and it can be one after the other till the tide or wind changes.Hope you find some the heads will not last long if dropped out wide

Have a look at this thread

fishwrecked.com/forum/ningaloo-station-boating-advice    mud map drawn over Google earth showing places to go in and out. Other useful info in that thread also. And use the Search function and just type in Ningaloo, lots of info, great resource.

May is a great fishing time. Ever been interested in catching billfish? Just get outside the reef  from the Lefroy entrance heading south in 25-40 metres and troll some kind of skipping bait with a single 8/0 circle through the head, and catch your first sailfish. Then you'll be hooked on billfish   Apart from that, same depth, and in to 20 metres for mackerel and wahoo, just troll bibbed minnows. Sharks are real problem, don't try to play with them on 6kg, need to  get them in reasonably quick. Bottom fishing? Gets worked hard but smart fishing will still get you quality fish. Drift fishing in the shallower water dragging lead will see you get snagged a lot. Better to pick a spot and anchor, or go a bit wider. There is a good reliable strip in around 70 metres runs for a fair way north and south of the entrance. Want to deep drop? it's only a few miles out to 250-350 metres. As with anywhere, best fishing early and late, but don't be tempted to leave it until dark; easy to come ina nd out with the sun high, less so looking into a setting sun and dark water. Lots of lumps between Point Billy and the Lefroy entrance , a danger at low tide.

And make sure you are aaware of the Sanctuary Zones--one is north of the Lefroy entrance, heading north, the other starts down near norwegian bay. The pole markers on the land, which you line up to see the boundaries, anre not very visible from far outside the reef. Get the lats and longs from the Fisheries website, mark them in on your plotter. They take them very seriously.

 Make sure your boat trailer

Fri, 2017-12-01 05:52

Make sure your boat trailer is in tip top condition. The track in is usually bad.  If your springs are a bit old and rusty id suggest new ones and buy a few spare rollers as they can get flats on them and not roll.

Rain

Tue, 2018-06-19 21:26

Be aware that they have just had 100mil of rain up there.

The tracks are probably diabolical after that and I’d dare say near

the homestead the salt pan would be flooded.

Call the homestead before you go

Track

Wed, 2018-06-20 10:48

Hi

Just returned from there 1 week ago, track was worst id seen it, took 3 hours from point billie to main road, very corrugated in most areas, with boat on and tyres down still had to go very slowly, As for fishing sharks were worse than ever, barely got anything decent to the boat bait fishing, Spaniards are scares atm, Caught some pelagics, but even that was hard work at times, plenty of tuna around though

Hi just got back from Coral

Wed, 2018-06-20 11:49

Hi just got back from Coral Bay and our charter didn't have much luck unless fishing well over 120. Most the time it was 160. I caught all mine bottom bouncing with my own rod with a double dropper loop rig and with the Glow in the dark B2 Squid Skirts threaded just before the hook. Note to self, make your rigs with the extra attachment for the hooks looped in so everytime you get attached by sharks you dont lose the rest of your rig. My gear was heaven for the sharks. The fish loved the pink ones and i caught doubles with them most the time. the goldies loved them. Also i gave one of my lures to a friend and apparently they killed it the day they went out. Heaps of tuna and mackies i think they said. Should have kept it for myself. It was a Tekka Seriola Glow 210g in the pale green/yellow/cream colour. They put a pink squid / hook attached. not sure if the colour makes a difference but i just felt my pink B2s kept getting bites.. I always put one of each colour on each of the loops... but i actually have no idea what im talking about, so i probably make no sense. Have fun. I'm jealous :)
