New type of dive flag?
Gday,
Out having a fish inside Port Gregory reef during the week and had a tinne with 4 blokes in it pull up about 50m away and chuck the anchor in. One jumps in for a dive and heads over towards us while the others throw a line in. The diver was dragging a Hi-vis red floating thing about a meter long and 100mm dia which would stand up every now and then????? He swam around our boat and headed along between the reef and my boat where we were fishing and then popped up and floated around for a while until his mates came over and picked him up.
Did he not need a dive flag if hes not diving around his boat and the red thing a precaution or what?
Might be quite legal for all I know , but he was diving near the gap in the reef and the float he was towing could have quite easily been mistaken as a chanel marker and put some poor bastard up on the reef. Not having a shot at anyone but if these red floats are something people are using they need to think were they are using them.
Not the smartest thing Id seen.......

Don’t need a flag for freediving. Do for scuba.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Agree with dodgy
Don't need one free diving only scuba. I still use one when free diving. Just to let people know. Saying that still only prevents 50 percent off people racing near you. Jet ski people worst offenders

Yep smart move, I reckon if you're jumping out of a boat to dive in open water from a boat then common sense.

very common for us to have
very common for us to have free divers or snorklers operating in navigation channels down south near ramps etc ..
while its not illegal its bloody dangerous if they don't have a dive flag up ……. and you are coming in at 15+ knots and suddenly see flippers or mask pop up in or near your path through a reef break /channel
we often get dirty looks as we skip past , but honestly coming back in there dam hard to see and its only matter of luck , more accidents don't happen with them imo

Yes it was scuba.....
And the real issue was where he was using it.... Heading out you'd have a clear veiw of him, but coming back in, once you've comited theres no backing out, and when theres a bit of a swell and youre sitting on the back of a wave, you wouldnt see him until your nearly on top and really no where else to go anyway.

when i have been snorkling a bit off shore i used a proper dive flag towed behind me . its common sence to do so . better off using a typically recognised type of flag.
