Mandurah - Crabs
Submitted by Griffo84 on Fri, 2018-12-21 11:10
G’day everyone,
Has anyone tried for crabs in the Mandurah estuary recently? Heard there are a few around but on the smaller side.
Going to have a go with nets on Sunday.

I got my bag limit during the week scooping. They were pretty soft shelled and only just size. Heaps of undersize crabs about still so should be a good season hopefully

Saw a pic on bookface today of someone’s bag limit from scooping down there somewhere last night, good size too.

tried
Tried yesterday, seen 30 plus only bothered measuring 4 all at least 5mm under. Didnt seem to be bothering the next group that went over the same ground.
Will give it another month. Seen one school of whiting in knee deep water that took a full 30 seconds to pass me.

From what I'm seeing at night
From my last 2 nights out wading at Falcon I wouldn't worry about wetting the crab net again over our way until the end of January early February at the earliest the crabs are very small

Yep, tried a week ago for 4
Yep, tried a week ago for 4 hrs (2 boats) and only found 3 oversized. Must have pulled up 200 crabs over the 4 hrs. The positive is it looks like it’s going to be a cracker season as I’ve never seen so many crabs in the estuary. Give it another month and hopefully get warm weather in between to promote crab growth.

We've been working it 1-2x
We've been working it 1-2x per day from Sat in the Harvey Estuary. 5 nets and scooping the banks in between pulls but the strong arvo wind has made scooping near impossible. Been working 1.7-0.5m and getting only a couple of keepers each run and they're all 1-3mm undersize and getting 3 per net a lot of the time. Best haul so far was the wives scooping at 10pm on the only still night we've had with 7.
We caught a ripper this morning that had just moulted so he went back but based on that it's gonna be heaving come Australia Day.

There is a few more starting
There is a few more starting to turn up in the Harvey. Mate got ten scooping in about an hour this morning and another mate 17 in his boat the other day. Another week and there will be plenty I reckon.

Rub it in
Just to rub it in.
Mate had 4 pulls of his nets off Monkey Mia a week back and had to throw 11 size blueys back that were over his 40 boat limit.

Finally had just enough water
Finally had just enough water clarity to go out last night and the bigger ones were out and about in shin to knee deep water but it was still hard work in the wind and muddy water.
I tied some chicken wings to the mooring poles and checked them after each beer back at the tent. Worked a dream and I caught about 30 worth checking and 8 keepers with a few of them nice and full.
Good way to finish up the camping trip. Chilli crab and my own bed tonight!
